TURBO-PROP PLANE (Continued from Page 1) Stear, 3537 Lesley Dr., and Richard Petercheff, 2865 Questend Dr., who flew to Marietta, Ga., Wednesday to bring the Allisonpowered transport here for extensive engine flight tests. “We took off from Marietta at 3:45 p.m. and crossed Weir Cook field at 5:05 pan.,” Stear said, “averaging 345 mph over the 404 mile course. A 25 mph headwind slowed us down somewhat although we were very happy with our time. We didn’t try for any speed run although the plane *is capable of. much better speeds,” the veteran test pilot said. “It was a routine ferry flight.” The Allison pilots flew at altitude of 14,000 feet and the weather in Georgia and all the
way up was “just like this wonderful weather in Indianapolis.” The plane’s takeoff weight, including gas and six man crew, totaled 92,750 pounds. Because of the characteristics of the Allison T 56 turbo-prop engine with reversible propellers, acting as additional brakes, the big plane used only 2300 feet of runway on its landing. The T 56 turbo-prop engine, often referred to as a prop-jet, is like a straight jet engine except instead of developing its power through “jet” thrust it obtains most of its 3750-horsepower each engine through propellers. To accomplish this aeronautical feat the turbine, like the types used in straight jets, drives at high speeds a turbine shaft which is connected to a gearbox. This gearbox transmits great power at reduced speed from the turbine shaft to the propeller. The jet exhaust also furnishes additional thrust. An engine of this type permits heavy loading, gets the plane off and on runways in much shorter distances than a straight jet, yet gives the plane jet era speed during cruise. The Lockheed-built Hercules with the Allison T 56 turbo-prop engines has been placed into production by the Air Force and deliveries currently are being made to the USAF Tactical Air Command. The commercial version of this engine, labeled the Turbo-prop 501 engine, soon will power another Lockheed plane, the Electra, which is scheduled for commercial airline use in 1958. American, Eastern, National, Bramff, Western, and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines have ordered Allisonpowered Electras for their airlines systems.
