Mrs. Mary Wolfla won the electric skillet which the Junior CYO gave away Sunday. They realized a hundred dollars from this project and are very grateful. Seven year old Tommy Geiman, son of Mary and Joe Geiman, Jr. of Cunningham Drive, drew out Mary’s name. Tommy looked mighty sharp on the first day of autumn in navy blue trousers and a light blue sports jacket. > Bernie Herman, disc jockey, will be the attraction at the Junior C.Y.O. City Wide Dance on Tuesday night, October 9th, from 8 till 10:30, in St. Christopher hall. Hurrah for St. Christopher grade school's football and kickball teams. Boys playing football or on the bench awaiting the opportunity to play are from the sth, 6th, 7th and Bth grades. They played St. Roch’s Tuesday, September 18th, and won 27 to 12. Last Sunday they won over Holy Spirit 7 to 0. The girls kickball team played St. Michael last Friday and won 14 to 9. On Monday of this week they won from Holy Trinity 6 to 4. They are to play St. Rita tomorrow afternoon • on the baseball diamonds at the park. At an eight o’clock High Mass Monday morning Mary Hendricks was remembered at the request of Mrs. Gordon Gilman. The E. M. Fogarty family requested the High Mass on Tuesday morning for William Fogarty. The Mass on Thursday morning was for Paul F. Avory according to the intentions (Continued on Page 4)

In its meeting Monday night, September 24, the Speedway School Board approved the sale of $230,000 worth of bonds to a combination of five companies, the Speedway State Bank, The American Fletcher National Bank and Trust Company, The City Securities Corporation, The Indianapolis Bond and Share Corporation, and Raffensperger, Hughes and Company. The interest rate was three and one-half per cent.
Proceeds from these bonds will be used in the construction of Unit B of the James A. Allison School. Bids on the construction of this unit were to be received Tuesday night, September 25. The cost of this addition, including eight classrooms and an all-pur-pose room, was expected to be somewhat more than $230,000. The additional funds needed will be available from the 1957 Cumulative Building Fund proceeds. JAMES E. MAHAN The appointment of James E. Mahan to the position of auditor of the Speedway State Bank is announced by Harry L. Keller, president. Mahan joins the bank’s staff after serving four years as auditor of Peoples State Bank, Farmersburg, Indiana. . A native of Merom, Indiana, Mahan received his B.S. degree in business administration from Indiana State Teachers College, Terre Haute. In 1951 he received his M.S. degree from the same institution. During World War II Mahan served three and a half years with the Navy. Mr. and Mrs. Mahan and their three children have moved from Farmersburg to Speedway and reside at 4923 West 14th Street.
CASTLE CRAIG CHAPTER I.T.S.C. The Castle-Craig Chapter of ITSC officially opens its 1956-57 season Thursday, September 27, at 8:00 p.m., with a meeting at the home of Mrs. Hollis F. Nay, 3118 N. CYF RETREAT Everyone going to the retreat at McCormick’s Creek remember to be at the church at 8:30 a.m., Saturday the 29th. If you can’t make it that early, come when you can—we will be at Camp Friendly in McCormick’s Creek State Park. CLERMONT WJS.C.S. The regular meeting of the W.S.C.S. of the Clermont Methodist Church was held at the church September 19th. Seventeen members, one visitor and three children were present. Mrs. David Killion, President, presided at the business meeting where plans for the workshop of World Understanding and Citizenship Brunches were announced. The program was presented by Mrs. Otis Dowden and Mrs. David Killion. Refresments were served by Rev. Hedden and Mrs. Loula Mullendore. DEMOLAY On Sept. 19, we had a pitch-in that was a big success. Thanks to all who attended. After the supper we had a stated meeting at which we discussed having a dance. The dance will be- held Sept. 28, after the Lawrence Cen. game. -This dance will be for couples only. All members try to get their dues paid if possible. After the dinner we met at the home of Alice Farley, held our business meeting and then were highly entertained with vacation stories and experiences as related by the members. PRESENTATION OF PORTRAIT OF JAMES A. ALLISON ? An oil portrait of the man whbse name it bears will occupy a prominent position in Speedway’s newest public school—The James A. Allison Elementary School at 22nd and*"Allison. It will be presented tomorrow afternoon at 4 o’clock to Robert J. Kryter, President of the School Board by E. B. Newill, vice president of General Motors and general manager of the Allison Division—whose name also stems from the Speedway pioneer. Mr. Richard C. Jordan, Supt. of Speedway Schools and other Board members; S. Robert McMahon, treasurer; and Donald Wright, secretary, and several members of the faculty will attend the presentation. The portrait was painted by Marie Goth, one of Indiana’s leading portrait painters. Christening of the James A. Allison school follows a School Board decision that Speedway’s four elementary schools be given the names of the men who founded the 500 mile Speedway. School Na 1 on Winton Ave. is now the Carl G. Fisher; School No. 2 on Whitcomb is the Arthur C. Newby. School No. 3 is James A. Allison and a new School No. 4, when built, will be the Frank Wheeler. Old timers recall when people employed at Prest-O-Lite and the Allison shop started buying their first homes in Speedway City, one of their inquiries was “where will our children go to school?” In answer, the first elementary school was erected on Winton Avenue between 13th and 14th (Continued on Page 6)
PSI lOTA XI The regular business meeting of the Speedway Chapter of Psi lota Xi will be held tonight, Thursday, September 27th at the American Legion Home. This is a very important meeting and everyone is urged to attend. SPEEDWAY LITTLE LEAGUE FOOTBALL The results of the-’membership selling contest were as follows: The autographed footballs were won by M. Godan and R. Schwimmer; face guard by J. Petersqp and a pair of athletic socks eacn by Mead, Bell, Scanlon, Parson, Raehn, DeLisle, Haettinger, Foster and Howard. Congratulations, boys. s You did a fine job. Practice is proceeding very satisfactorily. The boys have been assigned to teams, have played some practice games and will soon be playing regularly scheduled games. If anyone knows of any other teams of comparable age groups that would like to play our boys, contact one of the coaches or get in touch with R. BROWNIE TROOP NEWS The mothers of Brownie Troop No. 178 held a meeting on Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Robert Foote. A well rounded program was planned for the year, one that will include the spiritual, social and educational. Communion in a body for St. Christopher troops will be on the third Sunday of each month. The first will be October 21st at 8:00 o’clock. A social affair in the form of a tea party will be held in November to celebrate the troop’s third birthday. To this, all mothers will be invited with the Brownies acting as hostesses. Tentative plans for trips are to the Planetarium at Butler, the Goodnight Farms, a milk company and several more. In charge of the Troop this year will be Bertha Foote, leader, Audrey Zischka, co-leader, assisted by Rose Gordon and Alice Dale Decker. Those appointed on the Troop committee were Lillian Plumer, Marie Hatch and Rose Sherman. The first meeting of the year is, planned for Thursday, October 4th. While Mr. Foote entertained the group with some beautiful colored slides of the fathers and daughters picnic, held at the Goodnight Farm last spring, Mrs. Foote and Mrs. Zischka served delicious refreshments. Meeting adjourned at 10:00 o’clock. TIP-TOP SHIP SHAPERS - Sept. 7th we had spread at Lana Stonebraker’s. Sept. 21st spread was at Susan Scott’s. Wowaa’s Society Of Speedway Methodist Entertains Sub-Distriet Miss Saturnina Lara of Vigan, Philippines, will be the speaker at the Indianapolis Sub-District meeting of the Woman’s Society of Christian Service on Friday morning, Oct. 5, at the Speedway Methodist Church. In 1952, Miss Lara was sent as an official delegate of the National Woman’s Society of Christian Service in the Philippines to the World Federation of Methodist Women which met at Berkeley, Calif. At this meeting she was elected Recording Secretary of the World Federation. On her return to the Philippines she was elected Promotion Secretary of the National Woman’s Society of Christian Service and was re-elected Conference President of the NW Annual Conference of the W.S.C.S. Being Chairman of the Deaeon-, ness Central Board of the Philippines she is also a member of* numerous boards and commissions of the Methodist Church.
