Joke—But Don’t Choke He was joking and then he was choking. Boisterous play among children at the dinner table frequently, leads to a choking accident. The child who crams food into his mouth and then attempts to play as he eats is liable to get the food down the wrong way. When death occurs due to the lodging of a foreign body in the air passages, the site of the obstruction is usually* in the larynx. In most cases, the foreign body entering the airway is coughed up. Those objects that cannot be coughed up cause distress, depending upon the size and type of the object and the duration of its stay in the lung. Choking accidents among adults are uncommon. In the adult there is a greater tendency for the foreign body to be swallowed than to be inhaled into the airway because the coordination of the swallowing mechanism and the laryngeal function is better developed in the adult. Prevention of choking accidents calls for simple, common-sense rules. Avoid hurried eating and insufficient chewing. Keep small objects out of the reach of infants.
