STATIC “American Inventory,” now in its fifth year on television as a joint project of the -National Broadcasting Company and the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation will present during December the problems of surgery, basic biological research at university level and a trilogy of situations. Robert Wald, executive producer of the program, guides a team of experts who find problems in the American way of life for live half-hour dramatic presentation. The first TV program to be produced under foundation auspices, Dr. Arnold J. Zurcher of the Sloan Foundation works closely with Mr. Wald in choosing situations to be programmed by “American Inventory” that will stimulate the thoughts of individual citizens toward solving problems national in scope. After a topic has been selected for presentation, Mr. Wald turns to the best writing talent available for scripts and to Broadway for a cast of competent players to give each program top dramatic quality.
VIDEO-VIEWS: Dale Evans, co-star of NBC-TV’s “The Roy Rogers Show,” broke into showbusiness in the late ’3o’s and entertained audiences on radio stations in Chicago, Louisville and Dallas. Ed Simmons and Norman Lear, who co-author the “Martha Raye Show” (NBC-TV). They claim that situation comedy on television requires two things: intimacy and a performer (“such as Martha Raye”) who can radiate warmth right through the picture tube. “Television comes right into the audience’s living-room. This requires a type of humor that is broad, yet not raucous, frantic yet not losing sympathy for the characters. Writing this very special comedy is a challenge that brings its own rewards” . . . Lionel Barrymore’s version of Charles Dickens’ “Scrooge” will be aired via Mutual on Christmas Eve for the 22nd consecutive year on radio . . . “Mama,” which stars Peggy Wood and is seen on CBSTV each Friday night, is set in the early part of the Twentieth Century but each episode deals with family situations which are counterparts of those which arise in today’s modern homes. “Mama’s” weekly television appearances
