ST. CHRISTOPHER’S CATHOLIC CHURCH (Continued from page 1) the social room. This is to be a pitch-in dinner and each lady is asked a covered dish plus her own service. Each lady also is asked to bring a 25c gift for the gift exchange and a piece of canned goods for the Little Sisters of the Poor. If any lady has any Western stories, or wishes to purchase some, for the old men, the Little Sisters have made such an appeal in the Indiana Catholic only recently. Now back to food, the committee in charge will supply the turkey, dressing, sweet potatoes and cranberries, rolls and coffee. A splendid program has been arranged and the committee urgently invites each and every member of the parish and each and every lady whose husband is a member of St. Christopher to join in the fun on Wednesday night, Dec. 7th. Mesdames Bee Breen and Ann Martich are co-chairmen. Last Sunday was Brownie Sunday at St. Christopher, so Sueann Thompson, looking mighty pretty in her Brownie uniform, drew out the Merchandise Club winner. Mrs. Lillian Such of 5124 Crawfordsville Road was the winner. Sueann is the daughter of Dee and Rosemary .Thompson of 1802 Ellen Drive and she attends St. Christopher school. Last week must have been Mrs. Lillian Such’s lucky one, because she also won the cooker-fryer at the CYO meeting on Tuesday night. The Junior CYO will give skit at the women’s party on next Wednesday night. Oh yes, and we were asked to say for the Junior CYO that they were sorry they ran out of doughnuts last Sunday morning, but that next time they win prepare for more. “Thanks loads, folks, for coming down.” St. Christopher basketball team is practicing every Monday night in St. Anthony’s gym and they expect to play Sunday afternoon, but their schedule had not been received when we went to press. Announcement will be made at the Sunday Masses, and the boys “sine would appreciate” all the support we can give them. Bob Zeunik, David Sheets, Mike Cleary, Stanley Goluph, Jerry Nordmeyer, Jim Fierek, Phihp Long, Jimmie Rolles, Richard Grothe, Robert Grothe and Tom Zeunik are members of the team. Coach, Johnnie Knight. Congratulations to Grace and Edward Such! It was a boy, born on his great grandmother’s birthday, Mrs. Barbara Gerringer, Wednesday, November twenty-third, at the Methodist Hospital. Christopher Ed and his mother are home and are fine at 1102 Planview Avenue in the Farley addition. Trustees and officers of the Holy Name Society attended a meeting Sunday night and discussed financial matters of St. Christopher. On Saturday, we celebrate the feast of St. Francis Xavier, pray for us and pray for the Missions! Next Thursday is a holy day of obligation, the feast of the Immaculate Conception. Masses at 6, 7:30 and 9 in the morning and at 7 and 8 o’clock in the evening. Don’t wait to do kindness: tomorrow may be too late. Pray daily your Rosary for peace in the world. Nora Bray.
GROUND BROKEN FOR NEW ALLISON BUILDING Ground was broken today for the engineering building which | will be the center of expanded research and development facilities for advanced types of aircraft engines at the Allison Division of General Motors. Part of the $75,000,000 engineering program announced in March, the new building will bring together under One roof engineering personnel now working in four separate plant locations. Taking part in the groundbreaking were: E. B. Newill, general manager of the Allison Division and vice president of General Motors, and the following from Allison Aircraft Engines Operations: R. M. Hazen, technical assistant to the general manager; Dimitrius Gerdan, director of engineering; R. E. Settle, executive engineer, and T. W. Meeder, plant engineer. Also taking part were Paul Hunt, president, and Robert C. Hunt, vice president and general manager of Huber, Hunt & Nichols, Inc., contractors, and C. P. Ewoldt, field engineer, Argonaut Realty Division of General Motors, architects and engineers for the building. Design plans specify a threestory building containing a total area of more than 270,000 square feet with floor space to take care of an expected work force of more than 2600. The new structure will be built on the 95-acre site at S. Tibbs and Raymond Streets in Maywood, the present location of Allison Plant 8.
“The new engineering building will contribute greatly to Allison turbine engine development by centering engineering personnel in a common location containing modern laboratories with most advanced scientific and calculating equipment,” Mr. Newill asserted. “Although completion of the engineering building was originally scheduled for April, 1957, we are setting our sights on a new target date of December, 1956,” he revealed. Supporting the activities within the new engineering building are new research and development test facilities already under construction. Phases 1 and 2 of the construction program for the component development facilities represent a joint project between Allison and the U. S. Air Force. Phase 1, which will be completed in April, 1956, will enable testing of individual combustor components for turbo-jet and turboprop engines. Phase 2, scheduled for completion in December, 1956 will contain facilities for the testing of compressor and turbine components. Also underway as part of the GM-financed expansion is a 186,000 square foot extension to the model shop. This new addition, which will be completed in June, 1956 will provide additional space for parts fabrication and engine assembly as well as a laboratory for developing new materials and processing methods. “Completion of the Research and Development Center, targeted for 1959, will give Allison one of the world’s best equipped centers
for the development of advanced types of gas turbine aircraft engines,” Mr. Newill pointed out. “Our objective is to maintain a position of leadership in the aircraft engine industry through the development of truly advanced types of engines for military and commercial application and hold for General Motors the position in this field that it occupies in its other fields of endeavor.” SR. HI C.Y.F. Our next meeting will-be this Sunday, Dec. 4 at 5 p.m. The topic for this week has to do with Christmas. A belated thanks goes to the mothers who served refreshments to those who helped on the paper sale.
