“MANNA FROM HEAVIN” By Carolyn Weckel (Reprinted from FUTURE magazine) On the dirt floor of a three room shack in Quang Ngai, Central Vietnam, a doctor knelt to examine the grenade torn hands of a 12-year old Vietnamese boy. The doctor was Gonzalo Dijamco, head of the 26-member OPERATION BROTHERHOOD medical team that recently moved into Quang Ngai, liberated a few months ago from the Communist Vietminh. The boy was an aftermath victim of the 8-year war that scourged this country until last July. Through an interpreter, the team pieced together the story: the boy had been working in a field near his home when he had unearthed a hand grenade left behind by the evacuating Vietminh troops. With a small boys curiosity he had packed up the grenade to examine it and accidentally pulled the pin. The explosion tore his hands and riddled his face and chest with splinter wounds. The boy’s father watched anxiously as Dr. Dijamco peeled off the blood-soaked bandages and gently massaged the forearms

swollen from poorly applied tourniquets. He and several neighbors had carried the boy in a net tied to a pole from their village 35 miles away. They had left at 3 p.m. the day 'before and traveled all night to reach the doctors jn time. News of the Junior Chamber International team had whipped through the province, where a doctor was like manna from heaven. Dr. Dijamco dosed the boy with ether and operated on a wooden dining table hauled over from the team’s headquarters. He saved the right hand but had to amputate the left, blown away except for one dangling finger. When it was over, one doctor said, “Its a good thing we were here. The boy would have died from loss of blood before they could have reached Tourane on foot.” Until the Operation Brotherhood team arrived, the nearest doctors were in Tourane, a city 180 miles north of the town of Quang Ngai. The 19 volunteer doctors and nurses, seven Vietnamese interpreters and I made the trip from Tourane to Quang Ngaa by army convoy on April 26, after a 2% hour flight from Saigon in a French C-47 paratroop carrier. The only route is a narrow strip of road which the Communists

ripped up before they evacuated to hamper the Nationalist Army’s occupation of the area. It’s been partially repaired, but rides like a wash board. Blown up bridges lie in chunks across the four rivers between Quang Ngaa. Our seven vehicle convoy loaded with personnel baggage and medical supplies had to be hauled accross at each point on a motorized raft. Army supply trucks had already pulled in ahead of us and the ferry could haul only one or two vehicles at a time, so every crossing meant at least a 2-hour delay. We finally reached Quang Ngaii, weary and dust-covered, after knocking around in a jeep for 13 hours. But the cross-country trek gave the team a close look at the people in their new area of operations and a better understanding of their medical needs. At the third crossing a soldier came running through the village carrying a man wrapped up in blankets on his back —a malaria victim, suffering violent chills that accompany the disease. (During the first two days the team treated 30 malaria cases). A small boy, no more than ten years old, hobbled up on crutches; his legs and ankles were swollen and covered with raw sores, the ugly symptoms of yaws disease that attacks children in nine cases out of ten. The medical treatment would alleviate suffering, in some cases cure, but to rid the area of such diseases the people must be taught Vie importance of cleanliness an 4 the isolation of the diseased to check the spread of infection. Medical work got underway in Quang Ngai on April 28. The day the clinic and dispensary opened, 575 patients were treated and the story repeated itself in the days that followed. Thirty minutes

after medical supplies were unpacked and dispensary tables set up the first morning, several hundred persons had collected outside the small tin roofed building that served as a climc. The team began work at 7:30 emd by 11 a.m. had handled 310 patients. Compared to a modern hospital the JCI set-up in Quang Ngai is like a horse and buggy to a fourengine jet. Yet in spite of equipment shortages, rude facilities, diseases new to many of them and the difference in language, the doctors and nurses are giving relief to hundreds of sick every day. Dr. Henry Hartendorp spoke for the whole JCI team when he said: “When we see these people work uncomplainingly day in and day out in spite of all the hardship they’ve suffered, it’s an added incentive to our own work. It means more to help a people who want to help themselves.” It costs $25 per day to keep a doctor and two nurses working with these people.
