UNION CARBIDE (Continued from page 1) tion’s atomic energy activities for many years. Mr. Rush joined Union Carbide’s Law Department in 1937 and was elected a Vice-President of the Corporation in 1949. He is presently in charge of all Corporation activities outside of the United States and Canada and is a member of the Appropriations Committee. Mr. Rush will continue to carry on these responsibilities. Mr. Bliss has been Vice-Presi-dent of Linde Air Products Company, the Division of Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation concerned with industrial gases, welding processes, and silicones. Mr. Bliss was intimately associated with the Corporation’s participation in the development of the gaseous diffusion process and other activities of the Manhattan Project, which were subsequently taken over by the Atomic Energy Commission. As Vice-President of the new company he will directi the research and industrial activ- | ities. Mr. Center has been Vice-Presi-! dena of Carbide and Carbon Chemicals Company, a Division of Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation. Mr. Center will continue to be responsible for the direction of the Corporation’s operation of the Atomic Energy Commission’s plants at Oak Ridge and Paducah, and of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Mr. Holmgren has been Executive Vice-President of United States Vanadium Company, a Division of Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation, which is a principal producer and processor of uranium ores. As Vice-President of the new company, he will be responsible for administrative activities and will also continue to participate, on a policy level, in matters pertaining to the mining and milling of ores. Formation of the new company is a logical step for Union Carbide, which has been active in the atomic energy program since its inception. Te Corporation was responsible for the design, engineering, and operation of the K-25 plant at Oak Ridge, Tennessee, the first gaseous diffusion unit for the separation of uranium 235 from natural uranium. This plant has been in continuous operation, under Union Carbide management, ever since production started early in 1945. Union Carbide engineers also have done the process development and engineering design for all the gaseous diffusion plants and additions built since 1946, including the installation at Paducah, Kentucky, which the Corporation also operates. Oak Ridge National Laboratory is another key atomic energy installation that Union Carbide manages for the Atomic Energy Commission. This Laboratory is the country’s leading atomic research center, and is the chief source of radioisotopes—the important atomic products now being widely used in medical research, agriculture, and many industrial operations. The Laboratory also plays a prominent part in the development of atomic reactors. It was here that the United States Exhibit Reactor, being demonstrated at the United Nations “Atoms for Peace” Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, from August 8 to 20, was designed and built. - of the operating Divisions of Union Carbide have been active in various phases of the Government’s atomic energy program. Carbide and Carbon Chemicals 4 Company is the Division which has operated the facilities at Oak Ridge and Paducah for the Atomic Energy Commission. National Carbon Company helped develop a super high-purity graphite required in the construction of atomic reactors. Metallurgists of Electro Metallurgical Company helped develop special stainless steels and other metals for use where atomic energy equipment must withstand severe operating conditions. Bakelite Company made important contributions in resin-processing techniques. Linde Air Products Company’s research on compounds of uranium and its experience in handling large volumes of gases under pressure have proved of great value in atomic energy operations. The Corporation also conducted extensive surveys for the Manhattan Project to locate uraniumbearing ores. United States Vanadium Company was one of the country’s earliest producers of uranium concentrates for the Government’s atomic energy plants. It has a number of uranium mines under contract in the Colorado Plateau area as well as uranium processing mills at Rifle and Uravan, Colorado. These ac♦tivities will be assumed by Union Carbide Nuclear Company. The consolidation of Union Carbide’s atomic energy activities in Union Carbide Nuclear Company sis in keeping with the program of the Corporation’s management to co-ordinate related activities and intensify and expand Union Carbide’s important position in the fast-growing field of atomic energy.
SUN-BANE OR BLESSING The sun, that luminous celestial body nearly 93 million miles away, has powerful medicinal properties of benefit to mankind. And like other good things, if taken in too large doses the sun can cause great harm. Sunlight produces many wholesome responses in the human organism. For example, the sun increases the general metabolism, improves sleep and appetite, stimulates the mental functions, raises resistance to bacterial infections, and tones up the blood. Over-exposure to sunlight can cause painful and serious injury to the skin, chills, fever, headache and even malignant growths. Tolerance of a person to sunlight is regulated by inborn factors and traits evident in the color and structure of skin and hair. Dark-haired persons are less sensitive to sunlight than persons with fair hair and complexion. It is common knowledge what happens to individuals who rush the summer season in an attempt to get a tan during the first day on the beach. Among persons i habitually exposed to sunlight the skin often becomes rough,

dry, scaly, and with a tendency to warty growths. These changes in the skin, usually seen in the process of aging, may appear prematurely in people especially of the fair type, following repeated and prolonged exposure to sunlight. Farmers, sailors, fishermen, and gardeners are subject to cancer of the face and hands from thus being overly exposed to sunlight. Sunlight is a pleasant thing, healthful and joyous, but know the limit of your tolerance and don’t overstep it. DON'T FORGET THE C.Y.F. PAPER SALE. SEPTEMBER 10
