“We believe this Allison Turboprop engine represents the beginning of a new era in speedy economical air transport of cargo and passengers. The Model 501, or T 56, is die only completely modern turbo-prop engine in production anywhere in the world today with greatly advanced performance over any other U.S. or foreign turbo-prop engine in a similar state of readiness. By “modern,’ we mean a turbo-prop engine with fuel consumption, power and weight which make it economically attractive to (the airline operator as well as novel for the passenger.”

Approval of the 501 by the CAA was based on successful completion of a stringent 150-hour official USAF qualification test by the Allison T 56, military version of the 501 turbo-prop engine, Mr. Newill pointed out, adding that “Additional CAA requirements covering dependable operation under commercial transport conditions also were fully met prior to award of the Type Certificate. “The 501 will be available for

commercial delivery by March, 1957;” he continued. “This will allow two years of military production and flight experience to prove the reliability of this engine before it is introduced to commercial operation. However, Allison is ready now to provide engines for aircraft certification and flight testing. With these preintroductory phases completed, the Model 501 will be available in ample time for commercial airline use late in 1957 or early 1958.”

Officially qualified at 3750 equivalent shaft horsepower, the Model 501 develops 2.3 horsepower for each pound of engine weight, compared to 1 horsepower for each pound in present transport piston engines. The 501 is the most powerful propeller engine ever approved for commercial service, according to Mr. Newill. The 501 is a single power section gas turbine engine whose turbine absorbs the energy from the stream of hot gas and applies it to a shaft which drives a propeller. This is contrasted with the turbo-jet engine which drives the aircraft by making use of the energy of the hot gases which are ejected at the rear of the engine. SENIOR HI C.YT.
