Learn and Live has become the ‘‘watchword” of the citizens of Indianapolis, through the tireless and steadfast efforts of Mr. Broderick. Having the distinction of being the city’s only Director since the inception of Civilian Defense in 1951, is proof of the high esteem afforded him by the entire city and its populace, but it only serves as a challenge for Mr. Broderick to reinforce his efforts to instruct each member of' the community to Learn if he is to Live. With the assistance of 32 key volunteer workers, and an office staff of 2 paid personnel, Mr. Broderick, has promoted Civil Defense in Indianapolis, until presently, there are 25,000 trained volunteers ready to go into action in event of emergency or disaster. Background for this noteworthy position was gained at Butler University, where Mr. Broderick graduated in 1939; as a gunnery and communications and security officer; finally as a Lt. Commander with the U. S. Navy; upon his retirement from Service in World War 11, where he served in all battle theaters of operation. As a result, he knows first hand just how vital the slogan he has chosen for communities is, and why he must -continue his efforts to inform the citizens to LEARN AND LIVE!
