ALLISON ENGINE POWERS NAVY TRANSPORT An 80-ton Navy water abased transport, powered, with four Allison T4O turbo-prop engines today flew non-stop across the United States in exactly six hours, with an average speed of 403 miles an hour. This is more than one hour and twenty minutes faster than the non-stop schedule for the fastest commercial airliner flying from Los Angeles to Washington. The transport is the Convair R3Y-1 Tradewind which departed from San Diego, California at 4:34 a.m. (PST) and was over Patuxent Naval Base near Washington, D.C. at 1:34 p.m. (EST). At the controls was Convair Engineering Test Pilot Don Germeraad. Five aircraft of this type have been flying from the San Diego Bay for the past year but all flying to date has been limited to the Pacific Coast. This is the first time that an R3Y-1, which has a hull instead of conventional landing gear, has flown cross country. The Allison T4O turbo-prop engines in the R3Y-1 are rated at 5850 horsepower, giving the huge plane a total of 23,400 horsepower. This power is equivalent to 12 Diesel locomotives of the type used in mainline passenger service. Each engine consists of two identical power sections driving contra-rotating Aeroproducts propellers made by Allison at Dayton, Ohio. Both power sections are used for takeoff and maximum speed but for fuel economy at cruise, one power section can be shut off. The engines are similar to those used in the Vertical Takeoff Aircraft, the Convair XFY-1 and the Lockheed XFV-1.

No one at the Prest-O-Lite Factory in Speedway believes that “all work and no play” is a good motto, least of all Ray Langlotz. Ray is a solid supporter of all kinds of sports activities. He likes to go fishing, usually spends at least a part of his vacations at a fishing camp in Michigan. He likes baseball, too, and he bowls regularly. Best of all, perhaps, Ray likes to play golf. Because of his enthusiasm for this sport, he has been the spearhead of Prest-O-Lite Athletic Association golfing activities. Of course, many other Prest-O-Lite men and women are interested

Golfing is the special hobby of Ray Langlotz, shown at left making li practice drive. Ray, also known as “Snobby” among his fellow-employees, has been with Prest-O-Lite for more than 26 years. In the picture above, he is seen checking a shipment of robber-tired wheels in the Receiving Department, where he is a Group Leader. These wheels are used on portable welding equipment made at Speedway.

in sports events and athletic contests. Besides organized golfers, there are softball and bowling teams for both men and women. Tennis and badminton also have their followers among the Prest-O-Lite employees. And, of course, many Prest-O-Lite people have regular duties in connection with the annual Memorial Day auto races at the famous Speedway track Fortunately, the men and women at Prest-O-Lite have the opportunity to participate in many of these after-hours activities. That is one of the reasons they like to work at Prest-O-Lite.
