FIRST LADY (Continued from Page 17 ly. She could not see a needy family leave her store without because of a lack of money. The Speedway business section was developed largely through Mrs. Marvel’s industry. She built the first garage and filling station there. Through her building efforts the first barber shop was established, the first appliance store, first hardware and first sporting goods store. The first flower shop occupies the site of her former home on West 16th. “Aunty,” as she was known to many, found time from her many business activities to see to the welfare of others. She was known as the founder of the Speedway Christian Church and attended there regularly when her health permitted. She organized the Ladies Aid Society and was its first president. For a time she t might a Sunday school class. The <jumes of the new church building were donated in her honor 10 years ago by her son. She read btf Bible every morning and night.
Mrs. Marvel’s yard was known far and wide for its size and for the beauty of its flowers and the variety of its fruit trees. She even had apricot trees. As a hobby she raised prize tomatoes and corn which she always gave away. Many Speedway race drivers had stopped at her home. Cheerful and blessed with the wit of her Irish ancestors, Mrs. Marvel often entertained her friends with Irish songs and jigs. Her husband, John Marvel, died in 1927, and she continued to maintain her home alone until six years ago, when she went to live with a son. She reared a niece, Carrie Pfieffer Smith, and, when the latter died, reared two grandnieces, Mrs. Robert Parke, Speedway, and Mrs. Thomas Moffett, Claremont, Calif. Mrs. Marvel was a member of the Marion County Old Settlers Club, whose picnics she attended regularly, and was one of the first initiates of Speedway Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. Formerly she was a member of Rebekah Lodge. Services were at 2:30 pan. Saturday in the Speedway Christian Church, with burial in Floral Park Cemetery. The son, Harold Marvel, and a granddaughter, Joan, survive. (Reprint from Indpls. News)
