St. Christopher Catholic Church (Continued worn page 1) Fatima Retreat House in Indianapolis will begin on Friday, February 4th, Mrs. Carl Sheets, Chairman of the Retreat Committee, has announced. Mrs. William Meyer is Co-Chairman. These ladies will be assisted by Mesdames Henry Rosner, Wilbur Reidy, Peter Martich, William Zeunick, Walter Bisdie, and Harry Davis. These ladies will endeavor to reach each lady personally or by phone, but if there is someone who isn’t reached or who wants to ask questions now, she should call any one of the committee. Ladies who have made these retreats in the past know the good which is derived from them. Think it over and talk about it before deciding that you just can’t make it.Our sympathy and prayers to Eddie and Grace Such. It s all for the church you know, and here is an article that is well worth the price asked—sl.2s. Nora Bray will be glad to buy four Book I Cook Books at or take them at a SI.OO each in exchange on Book 11, the new book. Of course, they must be in good condition. Call Mrs. Oscar Bender, Mrs. Van Sherman, Mrs. James Keating, Mrs. Frank Medenwald, Mrs. Walter Freund, or Nora Bray. Pray daily your holy rosaries for peace in the world. Nora Bray.

LIBRARY NOTES “The Family Nobody Wanted” is Helen Doss’s own story of the “one-family United Nations” and how it grew. This book is one of the new additions to the collection at the Brightwood Branch Library. It can be found on the 7-14 day shelf. Carl Doss, a Methodist minister, and his wife Helen adopted a baby boy and loved him so much they couldn’t stop with a “lonely only.” Now they have a dozen children—all adopted, although considered “unadoptable” because

First was Danny, who kept demanding a brother “just the right size of me.” But before Danny got his opposite, there were ten others. The Dosses have been called radical for their solution to the problem of helping “the ones needing love to find people who have it.” But as Carl pointed out, Christianity and democracy are both radical —“it is radical to say tha£ all men are created equal,

and that all men are brothers—and that the individual is important” Make the reading of “The Family Nobody your New Year’s Resolution for 1955. WHY PONT IF IT IS <3O YOU CARRY GOOD, WHY DO CUT-'RATE THEY HAVE INSURANCE? TO CUT 1 THE VX/ PRICE? Why take chances for a few dollars possible "saving”? You can "save” money by having your telephone taken out and making calls from a corner drugstore but this would be inconvenient and in case of an emergency might prove disastrous. You might do without the service of an insurance agent, too, and possibly “"save” a few dollars but like the lack of a telephone, this might, in the case of an emergency not only prove inconvenient but very costly. HARBENINNG OF THE ARTHHIWB Can we control the development o| hardening of the arteries? Because arteriosclerosis (Hardening of the arteries) and its complications are among the first causes of death in our population today, it is obvious there is no satisfactory method of preventing this condition. Understanding of the problem has, however, made it possible to identify several of the factors which change the rate of develop-

meat. A possibility in the near future is control of accelerating factors, even though prevention may not be possible. There is understood to be an hereditary influence affecting hardening of the arteries closely related to such disorders as diabetes, high blood pressure and obesity. Certain hormonal factors are known to' play a part because women prior to the menopause usually develop fewer complications of arteriosclerosis than to men of the same age. In women after the menopause the difference in the rate of occurrence of hardening of the arteries all but disappears, complications developing with about the same ferquency as in men. Mechanics of metabolism which is the utilization by the body of the food eaten, is thought by many investigators to have much to do with hardening of the arteries. One of the factors noted in the rate of development of arteriosclerosis is the pressure of increased stress on the blood vessels, such as occurs in high blood pressure. There is no evidence to indicate that drugs or dietary restrictions of certain foods can positively prevent the development of hardening of the arteries.
