Witch Doctors Aid Science In Battle Against Disease
Medical scientists are going to the witch doctors of the savage tribes •f Australia, Africa and South America for some of their latest lifesaving miracles. They’re learning plenty—things which may well mean the life or death of many of us in the years ahead.
For instance, primitive people In many countries have always had high faith in the curative ?ualities of mandrake root. In act, the root was endowed with such qualities that some believed it would scream if taken out by humans, so dogs were specially trained to dig it up. Science just regarded all this with a reused tolerance. Then, by accident, evidence was found that an extract of the root killed cancer cells in mice. The National Cancer Institute at Washington is deep in experiments now. Or there's penicillin, the wonder cure from earth mold. Balkan peasants have used earth effectively to treat wounds fer centuries. Medics are merely catching up to them. Those are only a few samples of promising discoveries made with all sorts of remedies used by American Indians, sorcerers of the Dark Ages, Australian bushmen, or head hunters of Ecuador, such as sumac, balsam bark, and wild parsnip. If scientists had studied their {medical history with care, all this {shouldn't be too surprising. Quipine, which undoubtedly has saved more, lives and prevented more suffering than any drug in all history, came to us from the Indians of Peru. Like other native remedies, it was pooh-poohed by the medics for many decades. Gradually, against bitter opposition, doctors came to recognize quinine as the specific for malaria, thus helping to bring this greatest killer in. all history under control in many parts of the World. But even with quinine, evidence is growing that Grandma, who commonly prescribed the drug for all sorts o/ ills, was a step or two abecd of the scientists.

At least Drs. Moss and Herrman in a recent issue of the American Heart Journal, report that quinine relieves muscle cramps by stimulating the heart to carry away the waste products in the blood which cause the cramps. And in another scientific publication, Clinical Medicine, Dr. L. A- Curley reports success in
treating iritis with quinine and aspirin but admits bafflement a 3 to how it works. Science still looks with doubtful eye on Grandma's unswerving faith in quinine for treating colds but-that hasn’t prevented it from becoming the most popular cold remedy of all time. And now some scientists are discussing tentative plans for more intensive research in this field. That’s symptomatic of the attk tude of the test tube set today. Medical researchers are slogging through jungles, paddling up the back-waters of the Amazon, and flying into the far reaches of Australia to confer with their respected colleagues—the medicine men of the world's most backward people

JUST BETWEEN US In 1964 ... If you haven’t built that “house of dreams” as yet—don’t be in any great rush. to They’re saying that in another decade (Russia permitting) you’ll be able to have a prefabricated house with a stressed-skin plastic dome. It will support itself without old-fashioned walls. Partitions will be used only for privacy. Your 1964 house will have a 15foot ceiling that at night will bathe the whole house with indirect lighting. You’ll have heating and cooling supplied by a pump—along with your own central vacuum cleaning system. In ten years, you’ll also have

A farmer was highly incensed on entering the new doctor’s office to be told by his nurse that he had to go into the next room and undress.
“But I just want the doctor to look at my throat,” he protested. “I can’t help that,” the nurse told him. “It’s the doctor’s rule.” In the next room the fanner complained to another unclothed gentleman. “Isn’t this ridiculous?” he asked. “All I came in here for was a throat checkup.” “What are you crabbing about?” snorted his companion in distress. “I don’t even have a sore throat.
