ATTENTION PARENTS AND YDUNG PEOPLE Again we ere in the month of October which means Halloween is not far off. However, Halloween is still October Slot end not until then. The police department js receiving complaints already 'about pranks our youngsters ere playing. For the past few yeyn the police have tried to be very lenient with the young people end children eround Halloween time, except where actual damage was done. Apparently they have not appreciated this, because thej have started in their so-called “Halloweening”. The first of October and by the middle of the month the citizens are so aggravated that their patience and tolerance are worn thin by the time Halloween/actually arrives. We realize that parents cannot keep a constant vigil over their children, but we do feel as though some parents are quite lax about their youngster’s whereabouts and activities. At this point we would like to point to some spe-

When a sweetheart goes away to school, the next best thing to an actual date is a date by telephone! For only the telephone can convey the subtlety and the warmth of the human voice so well. Maybe that’s why lovers are among our best customers! So many people who use Long Distance tell us they are amazed at how dearly they can hear the person at the other end of the wire. New equipment, installed since World War 11, has improved the ’’hearability” and speed of Long Distance. Have you tried Long Distance lately? People are amazed at the low cost of Long Distance. You will be, too, if you look at the rates inside the front cover of your Telephone Directory. They’re lower if you call piter 6:00 pan. on weekdays or at any time on •Sundays. And whenever you call, remember this—Long Distance can- be twice as fast when you CALL BY v NUMBER. Write those out-of-town numbers down! cific examples in order to convince you parents that we know whereof we speak. One report was of boys throwing corn, which in itself ta innocent enough, but the seme boys took the corn and rubbed it on the fenders of a new car, causing damage. Surely none of you parents would want/your boy to do such a thing. I know you would not like it if somebody elses boy did that to your car. The “Golden Rule” may be bld fashioned, but it still works. Another case in point, we have had many reports recently of stolen bicycles, which show up in a day or two. The police know some of the boys who ore doing this, and who think it quite e joke. But parents, do you realize that this could develop into e very serious matter which could end in juvenile court? The policeman, regardless of how lenient or tolerant, can do nothing if the offended party chooses to press the matter. And I say sincerely, the Speedway Police do not enjoy the prospect of having to take any of our Speedway boys or

girls to court! Another fact for your wwwidar ation: wo know of several boy* in our community who haw eoqp into drug stores, hardware stara* groceries, and other business Places and picked up small articles. These boys range in age from 6 to 14 years. Parents, titte is shoplifting and, this is where petty larceny originates. I know you are going to say "Show me the person who has never ‘snitched’ something in his lifetime!” I will agree with you, but I can also show you the records of hundreds of juvenile delinquents who started in just this manner. Why take this risk with your child? So, don’t you parents think its about time to have a talk with your youngsters and question them about their activities before it is too late? Explain to them that these early Halloween activities can, with the momentum of 30 days free running develop into something pretty serious. The police department is morp or less a go-between for the business men, the schools, the churches and the parents. We receive reports from all and try to work things out to the advantage es all concerned. Keeping the future welfare of our youngsters uppermost in mind. We are not trying to imply that your youngster is a potential criminal because he is pulling tricks which can’t compare with some of the escapades that some of us older folk can recall. We only ask your cooperation in finding out what your child is doing and curb, any inclination which might eventually lead him into trouble. I might point out here that the state curfew law is being enforced in some cities and towns already. The law is that any person under 18 years must be off the streets by 10:00 p.m. with a 30. minute'grace period. Unless he has a very good reason to be out, he is considered, by law, a delinquent. < The Speedway police do not want to, and will not enforce this as long as the young people do not warrant “watch-dog” tactics. So far, we feel that we have an exceptional bunch of youngsters here in Speedway and of course that reflects on the school, church and home training which they have had. That is why we are appealing to you parents to cooperate and help us keep our Speed* way youth "solid”. Another matter to be called to the attention of Speedway parents: Those of you who allow your children to drive a car be* fore they are of an age to drive, or drive with a beginner’s license without a licensed driver with them, surely do not realize the risk you are taking. If they are involved in an accident your insurance is invalid and you could be sued for all you possess. We have had calls asking for specific permission for young people under age to drive. This we cannot do, nor can any other police department. Only the State of Indiana can do this. The Town of Speedway is growing into a large town and we have a small police force accordingly. We have one policeman per 1100 people per 24 hours. These figures are only for the people who live in our town and does not include the 10,000 to 15,000 transients who pass through our town every 24 hours. I would like to commend the officers of thexSpeedway Police Department for the fine work they are doing and wish to assure you that we are not, as I have said, assuming a "watch-dog?’ attitude with ou» young people, but are only acting as a guidepost to prevent their natural mischievousness from leading into serious trouble. I would like the youngsters endthe new residents of Speedway to get to know our police better and feel free to contact any of them at any time on any matter, especially the youngsters. Our force consists of: Harry (Hap) Bernhardt, Martin (Stoney) Stonebraker, Robert (Bob or Cass) Cassady, Crawford (Smitty) Smith, Jr., and Paul Smith. We have a good town and a nice bunch of kids, end if we all work together, we can keep it that way! —Glen Collins, Marshal-
