VACATION TIME By Sister Sue Vacation time is here once more, and questions ebb and flow. . . . Where shall we go . . . what shall we d 0.... You go fetch the maps and folders, for they hold the cue ... of where to go and what to do. With eager eyes you scan . . . enchanted views of Sea and Land. . . . Mountains high, with mirrored lakes held in their rugged hands, reflecting trees and azure sky. . . . The sun behind a cloud is lost, breathlessly you all agree that this is it . . . then estimate the cost! You turn another page and pictured there you see, a spot down by the sea. ... It beckons and you hear it say “come ride the waves . . . rest in the sand . . . or gather shells at break of day ... or catch a fish ... or dig for

clam ... or sit and watch the sun's last ray, reflected deep across the bay.” But for all of this you can not pay. Here's a picture in another book ... of an inland lake . . . you stop to look. . . . You see a spot where you can land a bass, just round that bend. . . . They offer boats ... a cottage neat... soft white beds ... lake cool and clear. . . . This IS it ... to heck with costs. . . . Vacation comes but once a year! You pack . . . You’re on your way . . . every heart is light and gay. . . . The road unfolds like a lane of silk . . . you don't recall that you forgot to stop the papers and the milk! . . . Away you go down hill, up grade .. . you like your job and wouldn’t trade with anybody, see . . . but two whole weeks to fish or play . . . or just stretch out and spend the day beneath a tree and dream.... Ah Me! You see your sign, and turn onto a winding road, which invades a wood so deep and dense, there is no need for gate nor fence. . . . Here and there the sun filters through ... to spotlight a lovely view.... A lone tall tree . . . soft pads of cool green moss . . . still wet with morning dew . . . low beds of trended ferns. Somehow you knew, that they

would be growing there especially for you. . . . Yet in this same enchanted spot, mosquitoes have honed their bills, and laid a plot, to drill you through and through! You round another bend . . . and there’s your cottage by the shore. . . . Quickly you unpack ... all so eager to explore. . . . Soon a gentle calm unfolds the night . . . the soft dark enchantment puts to flight ... the fire flies, and you watch them flash their lights ... to help each other find their way. . . . They seem an echo of the twinkle of the stars up in the sky . . . and all at once night sounds, blend into a lullaby. Then with the dawn’s first ray, you awake . . . jump into your clothes and make for that spot out on the lake. . . . Eagerly you sit and wait for a bass to grab your bait . . . and put up a nice stiff fight. . . . You have lots of worms and lures and flies, supposed to whet fish appetite . . . but they won’t bite! The sun comes out to burn your skin. .. . Junior feels a nibble ... gets excited . . . tumbles in. You drag him out and hear him say, “Look, Dad, he didn’t get away.” . . . ’Twas the only fish that was caught that day. ... A guy can’t win! Beth gathered a bouquet . . . Poison Ivy, you learn next day . . . when the doctor came to set poor Junior’s arm. ... He had climbed up in a tree, just to show that he was as brave as his cousin on the farm. . . . Next day Dad comes strutting in ... with a gash across his chin . . . but he didn’t mind at a 11... for he had caught a Pike . . . the size that any man would like ... to have hanging on his office wall. How time does fly and all too soon your precious weeks take wing . . . reluctantly you pack your car . . . take one last look at tree and flower . . . then head for home . . . remembering . . . each day . . . each happy hour. It’s good to get away a while each year ... yet as you are nearing home, you think of things you hold so dear . . . and it seems a little queer, that you should want to roam ... you are home at last . . . you sit in your car a while, and stare ... up at your favorite tree ... to delay the sight you know is there. . . . Milk and papers on the stair . . . uncut lawn . . . weeds . . . despair! Of course you knew ’twould be this way ... si resignedly you unpack ... and wonder what ever brought you back.
