No doubt everyone has seen St. Christopher s new school bus out in front of the school. Letters were sent out to all the parishioners last week explaining the purchase of this bus, and a meeting of the parents of children in school was called for Monday night of this week. At this meeting it was to be decided the operation of the bus, such as driver, and so on. First day of school at St. Christopher . . . September 7th. Several more large pieces of old gold were received last week, but our attention was called to the fact that much more is needed for the new chalice. The old gold in your grandfather’s or grandmother’s watches would honor God much more in a chalice on the altar than put away somewhere in a drawer. Maybe you have some old rings, necklaces, or bracelets. Or maybe some of your relatives or friends have some old pieces of gold they would be happy to give you for such (Continued on Page 3)
JORDAN ADDS NEW DANCE STUDIO To accommodate the ever-in-creasing number of special instruction and collegiate dance students enrolling at Butler University’s Jordan College of Music, the college has just completed its fourth dance studio at 1116 North Delaware Street. Two studios are located at 3411 North Pennsylvania Street, and one at the Odeon, 116 East North Street. The college also maintains classes in Speedway for pupils in that area. Included in the 1954-55 teaching staff are Eileen Poston, department director; Peggy Dorsey, Mary Sue Mahan, Margaret Sear, and Susie Smith. The new studio will be used for all collegiate dance classes and for rehearsals by the Jordan Ballet. The concentration of collegiate work at the 1116 North Delaware Street unit of the college is expected to relieve pressure from the other studios.
red cross asking FOR HUNDREDS OF VOLUNTEERS September 8 through 30 will date the local Red Cross Volunteer Recruitment Campaign, announced its 1954 chairman, Mrs. Perry W. Lesh. With an eye on survival following a major disaster, whether caused by natural force or enemy action, the local chapter must recruit hundreds of men and women for Emergency Welfare, a Red Cross responsibility under Civil Defense. Emergency Welvolunteers will survey their communities and learn the technique of mass feeding, -mass lodging, mass clothing. In addition, volunteers are needed for the registration, recreation and spiritual guidance units. (Continued on Page 3)

The Youth Choir will continue to sing at 9:30 with the Adult Choir taking its usual place at 11:00. This will occur beginning September 12th, the first Sunday after the Labor Day weekend. YOUTH CHOIR We have enjoyed hearing the children sing all summer as they have led the service. Now they will resume rehearsals beginning Saturday, September 11, at 10:00 AM. Ages 9 and up are eligible. We urge all who sang last year to return this year and bring the boys and girls who • have just become 9 years old. Mrs. Brown will again be the directress. SPEECH AND HEARING KINDERGARTEN With a more fully developed program for preschool children, the third improvement in the kindergarten in two years, Indianapolis Speech and Hearing Center will open classes September 13. Kindergarten classes will be held five days a week instead of three days as they were held last year. Other classes include speech correction and lipreading for school age children and adults. The Center also has an active women's group which meets monthly and regularly scheduled social activity geared to the special abilities of the speech and hearing handicapped. All classes will be held in the Community Chest agency’s office in the English Foundation Building. A small fee is charged for enrollment in classes when families are able to pay. Free hearing tests and hearing aid information are available year around. The Center emphasizes that studies prove the earlier training of the deaf and hard of hearing begins, the greater the progress that may be expected.
STATE FAIR FLORISTS EXHIBITORS Miss Florence Wolfe of Anderson, Indiana, chairman of the Indiana State Fair Florist Exhibitors, held a meeting recently at the home of Miss Mary Ann Luebking, 961 N. Bradley, Indianapolis, and final plans were made for the city and state florist exhibitors during State Fair Week, September 2-10. Mr. Homer E. Schuman of Columbia City, director of the Horticulture and Agriculture Department announced the entire building was being redecorated at an approximate cost of $8,000.00 Miss Wolfe stated the soft shades (Continued on Page 6)
Personals Mr. and Mrs. Keith Nelson recently returned from a trip to Miami, Florida where Mr. Nelson caught the largest sail fish reported so far this season. The fish measured 7 ft. 2 inches. He is having the fish mounted to verify’ this long fish story. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Oslos of Arlington, Virginia, formerly of Speedway, are very proud to announce to their Speedway friends that they have another son, Kyle Richard, born August 29th at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. Students in grades 7-12 will report to the high school gym where further instructions for enrollment will be given. Kindergarten To facilitate the enrollment of kindergarten pupils at schools No. 1 and No. 2 the following procedure will be observed at both schools. Pupils whose last names begin with A through F will enroll from 8:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Pupils whose last names begin with G through P will enroll from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. Pupils whose last names begin with Q through Z will enroll from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. The same division will apply to both elementary schools for the purpose of enrollment only. Birth certificates are required of each enrolling pupil and the child must have reached his fifth birthday on or before October 31, 1954. A fee of SI.OO for each semester or $2.00 for the year should be presented at the time of enrollment. HOMECOMING The Sahara Grotto Auxiliary is planning its Homecoming and Past President’s Day Dinner to be held Wednesday, September 8, at 6:30 p.m. in the Grotto Clubhouse, 4107 East Washington St. Mrs. Evelyn Spilker, president, will honor all Past President during the dinner. BASEBALL NEWS Our baseball season is just about over, but the glory that our Meteors team has brought to Speedway will linger on for quite awhile and give us new goals to strive for each year. The Meteors have brought a City Championship back to Speedway for the first time and Tommy Jones won the George K. Lilly Award which is a great honor for a boy to receive and we’re all proud and happy for him. In the three games of 'the play-offs our pitchers allowed only three hits and there were no errors. These boys will all attend a big banquet given for them where they will all receive their awards as champions. Our congratulations also to the coach, Charles Johnson, of the Meteors, and Jim Roberts, his assistant, whose help brought this team along to success. Mr. Johnson wishes to take this opportunity to thank all the parents for their support and loyalty and also thanks to the boys for the trophy which they presented to him and thanks again to Tom Strouse for his help and advice. SAFETY CHECK Speedway Jaycees in co-opera-tion with the Speedway Police Department will hold a Ten-Point Safety Check on Main Street, September 11th between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. The Jaycees will also sell Scotch Light-Tape for bumpers at this time! The proceeds from the sale of this tape will be used to furnish free tape for the bicycles of the children of Speedway. This will be done September 12th in the rear of the Town Hall between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Experts will be there to check bikes, etc. PSI lOTA XI Gamma Theta Chapter, Psi lota Xi, will start the year’s activities with a social to be held in the lovely new social room at the Speedway Recreation Club, 1500 N. High School Road, Thursday, September 9th at 8:00 p.m. Initiation will be followed by “More About Psi Ote” a talk by Mrs. A. D. Lantzenheiser, the executive director of Indianapolis Speech and Hearing Kindergarten, which is sponsored by Psi lota Xi. TOWN NEWS by Tri Kappa Reporter The Speedway Town Trustees, at thei? lafet regular meeting, approved the town budget for 1955. The new budget shows a new Town Tax rate of 94c, which is a drop of 7c over last year. This rate may vary some before becoming final, since several tax adjustment boards still have to give their approval of the rate. Our property valuation here in Speedway is $16,178,260.00 this year as opposed to $16,314,350.00 for last year. Town Marshal Glen Collins gives the following reports for the monts of June and July: June—l 4 Traffic arrests, 2 Accident arrests, 1 criminal arrest, 13 warning tickets, 24 parking violations. Total fines and costs $138.00. Larceny Reports Hub cap from 2 autos, building material from new house, empty pop bottles and cases, 1 bicycle, 1 tool chest from garage, clothing from 1 car, 1 armed robbery, 2 stolen autos, 2 forged checks, 2 complaints on juveniles, 24 criminal miscellaneous, 17 special detail assignments, 38 reports put on record. Total of 112 calls in the office. Reports of 10 accidents vestigated. 16 complaints on dogs —picked up 5 disposed of 3. DANCING SCHOOL OPENS SEPT. 11 Muriel Davis announces that her dancing school will re-open Sept. 11. All children wishing to enroll should do so on or before Sept. 7. Graded instruction will be available in tap, ballet, character and acrobatic dancing. CHORAL CLUR NEWS The first fall meeting of the Speedway Choral Club will be a galloping breakfast on Monday, Sept. 13th at 9 o’clock in the Fellowship Hall of the Speedway Christian Church. Come one! Come all! Regular Monday practice at 9 a.m. will be held thereafter. Our first scheduled program being October 26th for our Speedway O.E.S. The girls all send congratulations to Helen Kellam who has a new daughter, Barbara Jane. The club extends sincere sympathy to member Anna Belle Frye and former member Libby Ottinger. Other girls recently lost their fathers.

The minister has been invited by the State Fair Board to preach the sermon at the annual religious service held in the Coliseum on Sunday looming, September sth. The Official Board of the church has graciously given him permission to do so, and thus in his absence our speaker for next Sunday will be Dr. T. W. Nakarai, head of the department of Old Testament in the College of Religion at Butler University. His subject will be, “The Truth Shall Make You Free.” Dr. Nakarai will be remembered by those who heard his inspiring message presented last year during the minister’s vacation period. The special music for next Sunday will be provided by a mixed Octette. The liturgist for the worship hour will be one of our elders, Mr. Russell Cunningham CALLING ALL SENIOR C.Y.F.’ers and CANDLETIPPERS! This week-end we are to meet at the church at 9 a.m. Saturday morning, Sept. 4th, to go to Indian Lake for our Retreat. ROSE SOCIETY TO HEAR LINDBERG After a summer vacation of two months, the Indianapolis Rose Society will again resume its regular monthly meetings. The society will have as its guest speaker, Mr. A. Lindberg, superintendent of buildings and grounds of Butler University, who wiU speak on “Soil—Types, Conditioning and Preparation.” Evidence of the wonderful work Mr. Lindberg has done is seen in the beautiful grounds of Butler University, including Holcomb Gardens. The September meeting will b* held on Wednesday, September Bth, 1954, at 8 pan. at Holcomb Gardens House in Holcomb Gardens, 49th St. and Clarendon (entrance on Clarendon). The annual meeting of the society will be held and officers for the coming year will be elected. There will be an informal display of roses by members.
