HOW TO TRIM TREES, VINES, RDSES
Trees Small trees planted in recent years need careful attention, especially where you expect eventually to walk beneath them. It is wise to trim them slowly, removing only one, or perhaps two, of the lowest branches each year so as not to upset the balance between roots and top. Not all trees take kindly to spring pruning. Those that bleed freely when their sap is active shouldn’t be disturbed until later in the season. While the loss of sap may not cause any injury, it it untidy and not good garden practice. Trees that shouldn’t be

pruned in the spring are: sugar maple, black walnut, Japanese walnut, butternut, flowering dogwood and the birch family. Fruit-tree pruning is a science and an art in itself, varying not just with the kind of tree but the variety as well. If you grow apple trees, the object of spring pruning during the first three or four years is to develop a well-proportioned crown, evenly spaced branches, with the lowest at a hieght compatible with your orchard plan. The lowest branches may need to be lopped off flush with the trunk, while others are shortened by one-third or one-half to strength-

en them. After the fourth year, pruning must be lighter so as not to interfere with fruit production. Old apple trees will yield more fruit if all thin, new growth is cut away. On a well-established peach tree, cut away one-third of last year’s growth. This avoids crowding the crown and admits air and light. Vines Some vines are fully as much in need of regular pruning as trees and shrubs, unless you prefer the rampant look of branches in a

wild tangle. Japanese honeysuckle, once it takes hold, needs thorough pruning every spring. Bittersweet (Celastrus) is even more aggressive. There is not only much old and dead wood that has to come out, but the accumulation of dead leaves is a real fire hazard along fence rows and on banks. Wisteria should also be restrained by cutting back to within an eye or two all the long shoots that tend to wander far in search of support. This will result in more abundant flowers, and give the vine a neat aspect. The trumpet vine (Campsis radi-cans) never looks handsomer than when is is severly pruned every spring. Cut back all new shoots of last year’s origin to within an eye or two of the old wood. This will encourage a vigorous crown for the season to come. Roses Roses as a rule are pruned a little in the fall, and again in the spring before they begin to unfold their leafbuds. Cutting them way back, as recommended formerly, has beqp proven to weaken the plants, despite the theory that severe pruning favors larger and better flowers. This type of pruning may be necessary where the canes have succumbed to freezing temperatures; otherwise it is much better to let the new growth start from a plant two feet or so in height. Climbing roses may also require spring pruning. In most instances this means remov-

ing old canes that interfere with the proper development of the younger ones. Moderate rose pruning of any variety, bush or climber, is advisable. Neglected climbers show their best rejuvenation if you extend the pruning operation over a three- or fouryear period. How to cut Special attention must be paid to the position of all cuts. When priming to stimulate or permit later growth, always sever the unwanted part just above a bud or eye facing the direction in which you want new growth. If cut too close to the bud, it may die. If too much of the stump is left, it may become the entry point for disease organisms. Be sure to cut in the direction of the bud. That means starting the cut opposite, and slightly above, the tip of the bud, if it is of noticeable size; then slanting it away at an angle of roughly 45 degrees. This is the ideal position, but rather difficult to accompplish with anything but a pruning knife. If you use pruning shears, keep 1/4” above the bud. Branches removed from a trunk must always be cut level with it. Otherwise the healing over of the wound will be either slow or impossible. It’s a wise practice to paint cuts 2” or more in diameter with a reliable tree-wound dressing. Pruning tools The right pruning tools are very important to the job. Cheap ones add to your labor, usually make

a poor cut, and go out of commission just when urgently needed. There sore many different designs of pruning knives, pruning and lopping shears, hedge akfan, tree pruners and pruning sawn Each serves a specific purpoan There is the conventional type es shear in which the blades pass each other as in scissors: and there is the anvil type. This tool has a cutting edge that works against a flat base, and takes less skill to handle than the scissors type. A good pruning knife is a sound investment because it leaves a cleaner, sharper cut than pruning shears can make. It is useful only on thinner wood and takes a fins ( hand for effective use. Lopping shears are for branches not easily severed by shears. For still thicker ones you will need a pruning saw. The most serviceable looks like a hacksaw, hut the blade adjusts to any angle for getting around difficult angleg and crotches.
Handyman Column Question: After removing old linoleum, how do you clean the remaining paste and felt c£t a hardwood floor to get it readylor new asphalt tiles? J.E.P., Youngstown, Ohio. Answer: There are two ways. (1) Sanding, using a rented heavy-duty floor sander with medium paper. This will cost you about $8.60 total and will do the job in half a day. (2) Soaking with turpentine, after which you scrape up the mess with a broad putty knife. This takes longer and is harder on the hands and temper, but easier on the pocketbook. Question: I am finishing two rooms in my basement. I am using 2x4 studs after waterproofing the walls. My heating system is hot air and I plan opening the ducts as needed to heat the basement rooms. I planned putting 4-inch insulation between studs on the walls to save heat, but was advised by a neighbor that I didn’t need insulation here. I don’t want an enormous fuel bill. Who is right? Do I need an air space behind the insufation? M. 8., West Orange, N. J. Answer: Your only heat loss would be through the foundation above grade. Below that it is practically nil. By covering the foundation with asphalt, covered with 15-pound felt paper, you would have added insurance against moisture damage and also all the insulation you need. If you feel you should insulate, use 2inch batts above grade only. You could also use 2x3 studs in place of 2x4. Just take care that* in opening the ducts you aren’t robbing upstairs rooms of needed heat. I
Question: The first floor of my] two-family house gets most of the ] noises from the second floor. Is I there any way to correct this? I thought of lowering the ceiling; about 6 inches, placing insulation between the 2x4’s and the old ceiling, then finishing the new ceiling with plaster board. What do you think of this idea? S.M., Syracuse, N. Y. Answer: Would suggest you cover the ceiling first with one of the 5/16-in. thick fiberous boardtype insulations’, then put up the new joinsts. If you use fiberous materials for the new ceiling in- . stead of plaster board, you will probably elimate all noise from above except those thudding vibrations carried through tht house timbers of the walls. Question: I have combination aluminum screen and storm sash with the self storing unused sections which slide up out of the way. They are four years old. This spring, when changing oven I had a good deal of trouble with the top glass section binding. How can I free the stuck sections and prevent any more of this trouble? T.H.McS., Springfield, Mass. Answer: Some forms of aluminum, not being burnished and coatedr tend to corrode. This causes the binding. You can polish the grooves in which the sash slides with a wire brush, preferably one of the circular type, medium course, used as a drill attachment. You can that coat the groves with candle wax as a preventive measure. It’s an ideal lubricant for this purpose. To free stuck windows, work carefully with a small pry bar, exerting pressure on the vertical sides of the frame only, otherwise you will crack the glass. To avoid scratches, pad the end of the bar with several layers of cloth tightly wrapped around the end.
