requires the fewest tools and time to install, with cost as the next' factor. Would flexible copper tubing, rigid copper tube with sweated fittings, or plastic for cold water be best? Or should I use regular galvanized pipe? P.H.W., Clermont, Indiana. Answer: By all means use flexible copper tubing with flared joints. This can be bent around comers without extra fittings, and be threaded through walls easily. The only tools required are a flaring tool, hammer, and two wrenches to draw up the connections, plus a handful of steel wool to polish the pipe ends. Plastic tubing, of course, can be cut with a knife and fitted together with a screwdriver to tighten the clamps, but is limited to cold water lines. On drain lines, stick to the standard galvanized pipe and cast iron, unless your local code permits a change to asbestos-cement types on the larger drain line. Question: I have a warm air furnace with a stoker. Every time it rains, water runs down the chimney and into the smoke pipe. The pipe rusts out and has to be replaced. What can I do to eliminate this? Mrs. P. M., Omaha, Neb. Answer: The smoke pipe should not extend into the chimney far enough to have water reach it by this method. Removal of the protruding end, or adjustment of its

storing clothing out of season. Do you have any plans for such a project? M.G., East Pittsburgh, Penna.
Answer: You can make a light weight framework of 2x2 stock, anchoring it to the floor with lead anchors in drilled holes and to the overhead joists with nails. Put up 2x2 furring on the wall side and cover that part of the wall with asphalt paint. Cover the furring with % inch plywood, and

cover the sides with perforated hardboard for ventilation. You can get plans for such a unit from the January issue of The Family Handyman magazine available on news stands and hardware stores. That plan calls for sliding doors, but you could substitute a hinged door if you prefer. Hang garments in plastic moth-and-moisture proof bags as the safest storage system. Question: I wish to lay Kentile over my kitchen, at present covered with linoleum which is still in very good condition. Is this possible, or must I remove the linoleum first? J.S., Bronx, New York. Answer: Linoleum is usually protected with wax which would have to be removed before the tile adhesive could be successfully used. Examine the linoleum carefully also for depressed areas, i£r dications of a damaged floor beneath which should be repaired. In this case it would be better to remove the linoleum, repair the wood floor, then lay the tiles directly on it. Incidentally, adding tiles on the linoleum will raise the floor height so that doon swinging over it may have to be trimmed down. Courtesy the Family Handyman Magazine
INCREASED EARNINGS AT PITMAN-MOORE Pitman - Moore Company production employees earned on an average of 7% more last year as a result of the Share of Production plan put in effect in January, 1953, company officials today. Based on employees’ own efforts to increase productivity and reduce cost of labor and material, the plan was devised by A. W. Rucker of Eddy-Rucker-Nick-els Company, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Life blood of the Rucker plan is the suggestions and ideas submitted by employees. The incentive plan is unique in that it k not a profit-sharing program. Rather, it is a “share the production” plan. As productivity of the employees increases, their pay increases in exactly the same degree. The formula, perfected by Mr. Rucker, guides calculations of wage amounts above regular and overtime pay checks. Progress in productivity of each quarter of the year is measured by the plan and additional earnings paid to employees et such times. The fourth quarter was average for 1953 with earnings amounting to approximately 7% for both the last period and the entire year. While it was made retroactive to the first of the year, the plan was not put into effect until February. For this reason, the first quarter contributed vary little which reduced the 1953 average. The year’s peak quarter was die second three months which amounted to 11%. Twenty-five par cent of the first three quartan* earnings are held in reserve and paid at the end of the year, resulting in employees receiving two substantial checks after the fourth quarter and annual Share of Production earnings have been calculated, m Both management and ees are convinced of the success of the plan. All out drives have been launched by employee catn*| mittees at both the company’ll Indianapolis and ZionsviUe plants to make 1954 even more succemful, with more suggestions the goal of their special efforts. Than are mighty few people who think what they think they
