All the courage in the world won’t help this little girl feed herself. The hand for loan belongs to a Red Cross Nurse’s Aide who, after 80 hours of Red Cross training, volunteers her time at civilian hospitals. To continue its many volunteer activities for “hospitalees”, its disaster relief for needy refugees, its countless deeds for Gls and their families, Red Cross needs a hand. As Marion County citizens join Red Cross this March the generous flow of dollars will give a hand to Red Cross, will lend a hand to a little child.

As it has been rumored for weeks, NBC just announced that it is going to star Sid Caeser in an hour-long show next fall. Imogene Cocoa will do a half-hour situation comedy series, while Max Liebman, who produced “Your Show of Shows” and brought Sid and Imogene together, will continue to carry on a show of that title but with an entire new cast. “Your Show of Shows” has not fared too well this season, rating-wise, so the program bosses at NBC are going to turn the situation into a triple threat with three brand-new shows. Stage and screen star Tom Powers plays the leading role in “Ringo’s Last Assignment,” to be seen March 16 on NBC-TV’s “Fireside Theater.” The story has a newspaper background with Powers playing a reporter about to be pensioned off and replaced by a young gal cub. Comic Ben Blue is now in Hollywood making a series of TV films. Soprano Eileen Farrell will join Gordon Macßae in Victor Herbert’s “The Red Mill” on NBC’s “The Railroad Hour,”_ Monday, March 8. The original book and lyrics by Henry Blossom were adapted for this broadcast by Lawrence and Lee. Some of the songs to be heard include “In Old New York,” “Every Day Is Ladies Day With Me” and “Moonbeams.”

I HEARD: That Fred Allen, who loses his ciggie sponsor for his “Judge For Yourself” series at the end of this season, is already cooking up a new-type panel show for the fall. That Scrabble fans might like to know there’s a new parlor game on the way based on worldwide news events. It will be called “Swayze” and is the brainchild of John Cameron Swayze of the NBC-TV News Caravan. That Edward R. Murrow’s nightly CBS radio news show will be presented by a motor car manufacturer Monday, Wednesday and Fridays, in the Central, Mountain and Pacific time zones. That the Mutual Network should be highly congratulated for bringing the popular radio team of Gene and Glenn, as Jake and Lena, back to the airwaves. It hardly seems possible but these mike favorites made their debut 25 years ago! That Rod Brasfield, comic on NBC’s “Grand Ole Opry” is winning friends with this etiquette hint: “Never tell a lady she’s fat, just says she’s short for her weight!” That Sloan Simpson, former First Lady of New York City, is now heard every morning over the MBS Network. DIAL DATA: Dr. Bergen Evans will star in a new panel show on ABC-TV, Thursday nights, called “It’s About Time.” Like his “Down You Go” stanza, the show will originate from Chicago. Elizabeth Demming, who is featured as Meta Roberts in “The Guiding Light” on CBS-TV and Radio, never did appear on Broadway as an actress but that doesn’t mean she never had stage experience. She has been acting since shft was fourteen years old and has played with seven major summer theater groups. Marlene Dietrich’s radio series, “Case Istanbul,” will soon be t.gped into a video series for the popular actress. Red Buttons, who took a oneweek vacation from his Monday night CBS-TV comedy show while the panel program “Masquerade Party” filled in, has been renewed for another 52-weeks by his sponsor. The shooting schedule of TV’s “Topper” is being arranged so that Anne Jeffreys and Robert Sterling, the loveable ghostly stars of the Friday night series on CBS, can visit New York briefly in April. It will be Anne’s last chance to travel before she has her first baby in July.

SPRAINS ARE NOT SIMPLE “Oh, it’s only a sprained ankle.” That’s what the man said when he limped into the doctor’s office after turhing his foot on the curbstone. “Just strap it up, doctor, I’ve got to get back to work.” Proper treatment of a sprained ankle calls for putting the patient to bed, bandaging the ankle, and the use of ice bags to reduce the swelling. After 24 to 48 hours the swelling, pain and much of the muscle spasm have disappeared, and a clear study of the extent of the injury can be made. Manipulation of the ankle under local anesthetic will usually show the extent of damage, and x-rays are often used to show whether or not there is displacement of ankle bones. If the sprain is a simple one, strapping is sufficient to give stability and protection for the required length of time. In the young, athletic patient it is posto regain function of the ankle in two or three weeks, although in older persons it usually takes a month to six weeks. Sprains which are complex involve extensive laceration of the ligaments, injury to the muscle structure, fragmentation of the cartilage of the joint, and dislocation of the ankle bone. Such sprains may call for a cast, to be removed in a couple of weeks and supplanted by a walking cast. The ankle is of importance in life and injury to it deserves consideration. Because a sprain was lightly treated in former years the ankle often remained weak throughout life, giving rise to the common expression that a sprain is worse than a fracture.
