union carbide SCHOLARSHIPS I New allocations of Union Carbide Scholarships to become effective in the fall of 1954 .will bring the number of scholarships presently allocated to a total of 308 of a proposed goal of 400 scholarships, according to an announcement made today by A. V. Wilker, Trustee of The Union Carbide Scholarship Fund, and former Vice-President of Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation. Ten more educational institutions recently have been added to the program, bringing the total now participating to 34 liberal arts colleges and technical institutions. The scholarship program as originally announced early in 1953 listed 24 colleges. This constitutes as far as is known the largest scholarship program presently operating that is open without restrictions to all students of secondary anS preparatory schools. ft n i o n Carbide Four-Year Scholarships cover the complete cost of tuition and required fees for a full four-year academic course and provide reasonable allowances for the necessary books and supplies. In addition, each scholarship carries an annual grant-in-aid of S6OO for the college during the life of the Scholarship. Of this amount, SSOO is a grant to the college to assist in offsetting overhead and expenses beyond the amount covered by the payment 'of tuition for the scholarship student. The additional SIOO per scholarship is a separate allowance toward the expenses of a faculty advisor. The purpose of the Union Carbide Scholarship program is to assist deserving students who are interested in business careers to obtain a college education; to help assure the availability of larger numbers of trained men and women for future executive and administrative careers in business and industry; and to encourage and give limited financial aid to a cross section of American colleges and technical institutes of traditionally high standing. The selection of the students and the administration of the scholarships are in the hands of the educators in the respective colleges. Union Carbide Scholarship students are encouraged, as an important part of their education, to gam the experience of employment in some industry during summer vacations. While it is expected that there may be summer employment opportunities in sortie of Union Carbide’s plants, laboratories, or offices, a scholarship student’s summer work may be with any industrial or business organization. As to employment after the student’s graduation, it is anticipated that career opportunities in many fields will always exist in various Divisions of Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation. There is no obligation, however, on the part of either the Corporation or the student in respect to his employment, after graduation. Graduates of high schools and preparatory schools in the United States may apply directly to the following participating colleges: Albion College, Albion, Mich. Baldwin-Wallace College, Berea, Ohio; Bates College, Lewiston, Maine; Beloit College, Beloit, Wis.; Bowdoin College, Brunswick, Maine. California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, Claif.; Carleton College, Northfield, Minn.; Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh, Pa.; Case Institute of Technology, Cleveland, Ohio; Clarkson College of Technology, Potsdam, N.Y.; Colgate University, Hamilton, N.Y.; College of Holy Cross, Worcester, Mass.; Colorado College, Colorado Springs, Colo. It’s A Spangle-Bangle Year This season, and predictions for the coming season, put great stress on elaborately embroidered decorative trim on suits, coats, and dresses, whether they are for daytime, afternoon, or evening wear. Usually the more elaborate the design, the more: expensive the garment. Many times a dress will take on a sentimental value that far exceeds the monetaary value—just because you like its decorative trim! Embroidered designs appear on every conceivable fabric, ranging from the sheerest evening dress fabric to the heavy coating fabWhen you select a garment of this type, you are purchasing a luxury item. For this reason it’s not practical for a retailer to give you any promise on serviceability in wear and cleaning. THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF DRYCLEANING states that many of these trims give good serviceability in wear and clean-, ing. And their wear life may be extended with special care in both use and cleaning. Decorative embroideries include beads of every description—bugle, jet, satin glass, pearl, and radium beads. The coloring on the inside of bugle beads may tarnish with wear and cleaning. Designs of raffia, a palm-type fiber, will be high fashion this coming spring and summer. It looks like straw and will be used widely on cotton and linen dresses. Other embroideries are made with a variety of yarns, gilt, corde, and guimpe. Nailheads are used widely too. They may be the plain type that are fastened to the fabric, or the jeweled type where the glass stones are set into a metal setting. And every conceivable type of spangle, sequin, and cabochon is used too. Just remember, all of these items have limitations in wear and cleaning. Enjoy their beauty but don’t expect too much from them!
The Family Handyman Column Question: For some reason, running water into our kitchen sink splashes water all over the place. I don’t know whether the pressure is too strong, or if the angle of the faucet is at fault. Is there anything I can do to stop this annoyance? Mrs. J. R., Kalamazoo, Mich. Answer: As mentioned in the January issue of The Family Handyman, you can attach an aerator device to the faucet. You can get one in your hardware

This soldier at a Korean outpost smiles as he passes out eigars. Why? The Red Cross Field Director has traveled many miles to tell him that he is the father of a boy. In a span of just 30 days more than 11 thousand communications were handled by Red Cross. Sometimes a worried G 1 wants Red Cross to see how his wife and kiddies are getting along. Maybe the military asks for illness verifications relative to a man’s emergency furlough request. Perhaps the messages concern births or deaths. As fellow-Americans go on joining Red Cross, giving to Red Cross their time and dollars, so Red Cross goes on as the connecting link between a man and his home.

reason, too, that a hose attachment is not recommended if the end of the hose is allowed to dangle into the sink. Question: Would appreciate any information on how to make a nice lawn on a hard clay soil. Have received much advice on
using sand in the clay, black dirt over it, etc. What do you suggest? P.C.G. Harpers Woods, Mich. Answer: A simple way to make clay usable is to apply one of the new chemical conditioners which surround the clay particles and permit water to enter and keep the ground from baking. You can also work in a quantity of compost, green fertilizers, or peat moss in place of these but the cost may be, and the effort is, definitely greater. Sand is apt to bake, right into the clay. Covering the surface with top-soil (black dirt) is expensive, and doesn’t improve the clay which deep-rooted grass could utilize. Try the conditioners, and plenty of organic fertilizers, and your lawn will be successful.
Question: I intend using asphalt or plastic tile on my newly finished attic floor. Is it necessary to use sub-flooring and finish flooring under those tiles, or can I just use a finish flooring on the joists and put the tile on this? R.A.M., Sewaren, N.J. Answer: Finished flooring is far too expensive to be used this way. Sub-flooring is too apt to warp and shrink under the tiles. Our suggestion would be to use either %-inch plywood on the joists and put the tiles down on it, or use a sub-flooring second grade lumber covered with %- inch plywood on which the tiles can safely be laid. Question: I’m building a house which calls for a 4-inch slab of concrete on the ground as a floor, raised 12 inches above the grade. Can I put hardwood flooring directly on the slab with mastic without danger from dampness? Would you suggest furring the floors or treating the concrete in

some way? H.S.C., Cincinnati, O. Answer: The slab can be kept waterproof by laying the concrete on a double layer of tarpaper spread over the fill. Or, the surface may be a 1-inch coating of waterproof cement. If you do not wish to apply waterproof cement over the concrete, y<Ai may apply asphalt and tarpaper over the slab on which the wood floor can be laid. However, such slabs are apt to be cold. Furring, which provides an air space beneath, will help to keep the floors somewhat warmer than if the flooring were laid directly on the concrete. Courtesy of the Family Handyman Magazine
