Frank Wisbar, producer-direc-tor of NEG-TV’S “Fireside Theater,” called on TV producers to avoid vice and violence in their video productions in a recent issue of Variety, the trade publication. “Simplicity in telling a story is the most important element, I believe,” said Wisbar. “I have found it pays off. We have enough violence in the world today, without bringing more into the home of those eleven million . families who have TV sets.” Wisbar, a veteran in the field of telefilms, knows what he’s talking about. His “Fireside Theater” films have been consistently within the top ten shows in ratings. , In Variety, Wisbar pointed out that “We operate on the principle that a spirit of humbleness and simplicity is the most dominant factor, and the mail response we get from all over the country is tremendously gratifying. It convinces us that the majority of American people want to see this type of drama, not one which puts emphasis on vice and violence.”

WATT’S WATT: Patti Andrews up and quit her famous sisters Maxine and Laverne again for the umpteenth time. However, the latter two will continue as a sister act and intend to get another vocalist to fill Patti’s shoes. A couple of weeks ago CSSTV’S Monday night star, Red Buttons, journeyed to-Detroit to help launch the 1954 March of Dimes there. Gov. G. Mennan Williams issued a special “honorary citizen of Michigan” decree for the CBSTV comedian, and Detroit’s Mayor Albert E. Cobo officially declared January 20 as “Red Buttons Day in Detroit.” Red appeared on radio and TV stations in the Motor capital and also made some tape recordings, on behalf of the polio drive, which will be heard on stations throughout Michigan. < Ray Milland, star of CSS-TV’S “Meet Mr. McNutley,” has been highly publicized as an expert horseman and a sharpshooter par

excellence. But few know that he is also an accomplished cook. On his birthday in January, with the servants on vacation, Ray prepared the capon, with his own original stuffing, sour “peasants’” bread, and a huge birthday cake. THIS AND THAT: Movie star Preston Foster has a new film series, soon to be seen on TV, entitled “Waterfront.” In it Preston plays a tug boat captain. Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, writers of NBC’s Monday night musical treat “The Railroad Hour,” started their teamwork in January, 1942. That was when they both were working for the Armed Forces Radio Service Network. Both hail from Ohio. Lawrence was born in Cleveland and Lee in Elyria. In addition to their radio writing the team collaborated on the book for the Broadway hit of several seasons ago, “Look Ma, I'm Dancin’.” Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, co-stars of CBS-TV’s “I Love Lucy,” will pay a visit to New York this month—their first since the nation’s top-rated comedy program went on the air three years ago. They’ll be in New York the week of Feb. 20 and on Feb. 24 will be feted as “Fall Guy and Fall Doll” by the Circus Saints and Sinners. This will be the first time in the history of the organization that a woman will share in the club’s widely known lunch(Continued on page 5) /
