STATIC Walter Winchell just received a belated Christmas present. His ABC-TV and radio watch sponsor just handed him a 52-week renewal on his Sunday night newscast Mrs. Phoebe Park, survivor of the widely-reported “talcum powder operation” (inserting powdered silica into the heart to stimulate blood flow) was a recent guest on NBC-TV’s “On Your Account,” when she described the events leading to her undergoing the rare type surgery. Mrs. Park a nurse from Woodstock, Ont., Canada, was a victim of a common type heart condition known as a coronary occlusion, she told emcee Win Elliot. Doctors told her she had but a few months to live. She read a magazine article describing a new surgical technique being developed in New York. Despite her doctor’s warnings she drove her own car to New York on the chance that her life might be saved. The operation was performed and Mrs. Park was released from the hospital with excellent chances of returning to her profession following a short convalescence. James McClain, who was Dr. I.Q. between 1940 and 1946 and then left radio to become a minister, returns to ABC-TV in the video version of “Dr. 1.Q.” on Monday nights. MIKE NOTES: “Daytime serials are the single most potent force in radio today. . . . Seven of the top ten daytime radio programs are serials,” says an article titled “Dear Friends” in the February issue of the Woman’s Home Companion, in an editorial and pic-

torial review of seven CBS Radio serials, all sponsored by P. &G. Tribute is paid to William M. Ramsey, P.&G.’s director of radio, a 25-year veteran in broadcasting and “probably more responsible for daytime drama as it exists than any other single individual. With a history almost as old as radio, the daytime serials have won recognition as “America’s favorite romances.” Among the veteran’s cited is the CBS-Radio-TV “The Guiding Light’— which this year celebrates its 17th birthday on the air! ARC-TV’S “Break the Bank,” with Bert Parks, just signed a motor car maker to sponsor the show every other Sunday. MBS’ Tiny Fairbanks sends fans personalized recordings when they send him lengthy, interesting letters. It keeps his record producers busy sending them out! DID YOU KNOW? That Robin Morgan, seen as “Dagmar” in the Friday night CBS-TV “Mama” series, started out as a model at the age of five? Later she became a fashion commentator and the world’s youngest disk jockey. She competed with 100 young actresses for the “Dagmar” role and celebrates her 11th birthday on January 29. . . . That Jack Benny win do his Feb. 28th CBS-TV cast from New York? He win be in New York on Feb. 21 to act as toastmaster at the Friars dinner for Georgie Jessel. That ABC’s Johnny Desmond and Shirley Harmer win be crowned King and Queen of Winter on Feb. 12? The ceremonies win take place at Saranac Lake. That the “Fireside Theater" drama for Feb. 2, via NBC-TV, is entitled “The .Old Order (Continued on Page 5)
