Age and Its Changes Some claim they can tell the age of a horse by its teeth. Others insist they can estimate the age of a man by his skin. The skin of the elderly is wrinkled and appears thin. Elasticity is diminished and this is easily demonstrated by pinching the skin and observing how long it is before the skin flattens again. Dryness and slight scaling is often present in the aged over the shins, hips and shoulders. Sometimes these deficiencies do not occur—some people at 70 look as young as 50 year olds—and vice versa. If we could determine why chronological age and apparent age often differ, we would have a positive answer to the aging problem. Some medical authorities are of the belief the answer lies in the field of chemistry and chemicals such as the vitamins, hormones, minerals, amino acids and enzymes. Functional changes in the skin of the aging person include diminished sweating, less secretion from the sebaceous glands and increased irritability of the skin. Many observers believe these changes are due to a lower level of endocrine secretion. The pituitary, and thyroid, the gonads and the adrenal cortex are all implicated. About one-third of the skin complaints of the age person are due to some type of eczema. The second common skin disease in the older person is skin tumor. These afflictions come under the heading of senile skin due to such diverse factors as sunlight, injury, vitamin deficiency and diminished endocrine gland function. It’s A Suit Year, AU Year Fashion is startlingly explicit about the new suit look and fashion predictors are equally as explicit about this being a suit year, all year ’round. Well-dressed women will wear trim lightweight suits everywhere; to shop, to lunch, to travel, to afternoon parties, to office, even to weddings (including their own.) The silhouettes are various. Jackets go from snug-as-bodices to a lampshade spread; from a just - to - the - ribs length to well over-the-hip. There’s a new “bouquet” width at the top; new fullness flowering upwards from a stem-slim midriff.
busy season, the telephone is your link with that closeknit little group who wait and wonder where you are. Saving you time, saving them worry and inconvenience, your telephone is always ready to serve you in business, at home, wherever you may be. And for all the faithful service it gives you, your telephone is one of the least expensive servants you’ll ever have. Today it takes a smaller share of the Hoosier family budget than it did ten years ago.
SCHOOL NEWS (Continued from Page 1) dren of Holland thanking us for the gift boxes they received during the terrible flood a year ago. A typical one is as follows: May 9, 1953 Dear Friends, Having been sick I could not sooner write to you.-Thanks for the package that you sent me. I was so glad with it. I find it so fine that you, so far away, think of us. And since my toothpaste and brushes were lost in the water, they came in very handy. We had seven weeks water in the house. All that time we staid other places. I found that fine, but my parents didn’t like it they worried too much. Now I must close as my sister wants to write too. We are the same age so have to divide even. Again, hearty thanks for what you have done for us, and write back to us. Rine Slootmaker Another is: Dear Children, I have the package received and hearty thanks for all the nice things in it, 2 pairs of socks, 2 pencils and the pen I write this letter with. My name is Leo Hoaft and I was 8 years old May 11. I sit in the 3rd class. We had much high water here, 2 meters. We live in our house with all the furniture gone, but we are happy to be alive. My two aunts and two cousins, one 6 years old and one 3 years old were drowned. I would be so happy to have a little letter from you. Hearty greetings from Leo T. Hoaft. Rykstrastweg 75 Numansdorp (Z.H.) Nederland Scores made by 6th and Bth grade pupils on the lowa Every, Pupil Test of Basic Skills have been received. All pupils in grades 6 and 8 took the test which was a comprehensive test in reading, study skills, English, spelling, and arithmetic. Individual scores varied, but the class averages in all subjects in both the 6th and Bth grade were in the upper onefourth of all schools taking the test. Many of the class average scores were in the upper 10% and some scores were in the upper 2%. The mastery of fundamental subjects has priority in the philosophy of Speedway Schools and the scores on these tests indicate that successful results are being obtained.
