It took years of methodical and painstaking work by trained research engineers to produce the highly efficient design used for today's Prest-O-Lite acetylene cylinders. Roger Clemons, one of the engineers at the Speedway laboratory, is in charge of a research project for improving the rate at which the acetylene can be withdrawn from a cylinder in service. In this work, he uses a new performance test that allows him to determine what is happening inside the cylinder while the acetylene is being discharged. The instrument used indicates the effects of seasonal temperatures and cylinder pressures on the rate of acetylene

release. It is a method that quickly evaluates the results of months of research. This test is typical of those being made at the laboratory on the performance of products in various stages of development. Testing is part and parcel of the overall research program at the Speedway laboratory where so much progress has been made over the years in the production, distribution, and use of acetylene gas. Roger Clemons and others at the laboratory can take great pride in their participation in this program.

TweCeHege t Courses To Be - 4 Offered ta TV J College education will be televised into central Indiana homes beginning September 15, it w|» announced yesterday. * X Announcement that two coUefe courses will be offered over Channel 6 came jointly from Dr. M. O. Ross, Butler University president, and Harry M. Bitner, dent of station WFBM-TV. Thus, Butler and WFBM wm join other universities and stations throughout the country in pioneering in a new educational medium. “WFBM-TV is proud of the cpportunity to cooperate with Buller University in presenting thb series of formal educational telecasts. Television has already proved its ability as, a medium of great importance in mass education,” Mr, Bitner said. “We believe this now series of programs will be of great interest, not only as an aid to students who desire to learn, but also to the casual viewers and as an experiment in the field of educational television,” he added. “Butler University is entering the field of education |>y television in the belief that- it will afford to many an opportunity to continue their formal education for credit or as auditors who otherwise would not be able to do so. We are confident that education by television will expand rapidly to meet the educational needs of the public. He added, “All connected with Butler University wish to* acknowledge the cooperation and generosity of station WFBM-TV and its president, Mr. Bitner, who have given us the valuable television time in which to carry on this pioneering program in education.” The procedure will be simple. Students will register, either at the university or by mail, just as is done by campus students. Credit enrollees are furnished a syllabus or study kit and buy textbooks and pay regular credit fees. Non-credit students receive a syllabus, but do not need textbooks. Unlike credit students, this group will receive no assignments or take final examinations. Students will “attend” the course in their living rooms. Thousands of other persons are expected to watch. To those who simply are interested in the courses, it is just a worthwhile adult education project. The lectures will be made from the WFBM studio and students will take notes. Assignments will be made to credit students only by the instructor during the lectures and these assignments av ill be mailed to the university. Final examinations win be taken at the university between Jan. 15 and Jan. 22. Instructors or their representatives will give the examinations in homes to shut-ins. The programs will be telecast from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Mondays through Fridays. The courses will be almost exactly the same as given to on-campus students. Vacations will be observed just as on the campus. First course to be offered will be American National Government, carrying three credit hours. It will be given on Mbndayak Wednesdays, and Fridays. It will be a broad survey of the national government, the organizations and function of the three branches of the government. Because this is election year, the* course will highlight the presidential campaign and election. The instructor will be Prof. Hubert H. Hawkins. Beginning Tuesday, Sept. 'l6 and continuing the following Tuesdays and Thursdays during the first semester will be World Literature, a two hour course. It is the study of the greatest stories, dramas, and epic and narrative poetry written by the great man and women of the literary world. The instructor will be Dr. Wemtr W. Beyer, who is returning to Butler after a year of study under the coveted Ford Foundation Fellowship. James Phillippe, head of the Jordan College of Music drama department, will be the technical firector. Present plans call for two other courses to be offered during the second semester which begins Jan. 29Additional information may be obtained from the university Public Relations office.
