DIAL TOPICS: Telefilms for Fall presentation now are being produced in Hollywood. Frank Wisbar is ProducerDirector. It’s estimated that 65 million fans witnessed the Republican convention—and will watch the Democratic convention. . . . Danny Kaye is still receiving fantastic offers to sign-up for a regular TV series. . . . Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy will be working for Walter Winchell’s ABC sponsor this fall on CBS. ... Jack Benny is now playing to audiences in Glasgow, Scotland. Dennis Day is vacationing in Ireland. . . . “Who’s There?,” a halfhour guessing session starring the glamorous and witty Arlene Francis, made its debut last Monday on CBS-TV, from 9:30 to 10 p.m. (EDT). This entertaining new panel show features three mystery celebrities, who seated behind a screen, are seen by the television audience but not by the three panelists. Miss Francis asks the panelists to identify the celebrities through clues and certain objects shown them. Regular panel members are Bill Cullen, well-known emcee, and Robert Coote, veteran Third member will be a feminine personality alternating each week. Paula Stone attended the first session of “Who’s There?” Richard Lewis produces and Rex Marshall announces the program.

MIKE NOTES: Want to be a television actor? Think it over before answering in the affirmative. Take the case of Al Hodge, who as Captain Video thrills millions of kids nightly on the DuMont TV network, rehearses four and a half hours a day, five days a week. On top of this Al has to memorize his lines. When he isn’t memorizing or rehearsing, Captain Video is making personal appearances. Still want to emote on TV? . . . Bob Hope, Ring Crosby and Jimmy Stewart all have their bid in for television stations. . . . CBS-TV’s newest addition, “The Guiding Light,” boasts two rarities—it is the first daytime radio serial to be transferred to television, and it features the same cast on both TV and AM versions. Principals on the five-a-weeker are Jone Allison, Herb Nelson, Susan Douglas, Lyle Sudrow and Charita Bauer. . .'. Marie Wilson, CBS’ “My Friend Irma,” and her hubby Bob Fallon, are on a sentimental journey to Coronado. It’s where they spent their honeymoon. . . . Don’t be too surprised if we have transAtlantic television in the future. We could pick up London via a cable between Greenland, Iceland and Canada.

THE RADIO NEWSREEL: Jackie Gleason will lead a band for his new recording company. ... CBS newscaster Lowell Thomas will spend a busy vacation this Summer. Although he will not be broadcasting the news again until August 25 on his regular show, he was on hand for the Republican convention broadcasts and is set for special broadcasts from the Democratic convention. . . . Nelson Eddy is huddling with CBS program officials on a series of musical programs to hit the airwaves this fall. ... Latest Arthur Godfrey release by Columbia Records features “I Love Girls,” with words and music by Jimmie Dodd, a recent winner on his “Talent Scouts.” On the flip-over,

QUESTION: I am planning to construct a masonry fireplace in my new home and would like to know whether the firebrick must be laid in cement mortar or in fire clay. If fire clay, what is the proper way of mixing it? D.K., Uniondale, L.L, N.Y. ANSWER: When firebrick are laid in mortar, cracks usually develop in a short while. Fire clay is better, more enduring. Mix the dry, powdered clay with water to the consistency of putty, or mortar—an easily workable mixture. Do not build a fire before 48 hours have elapsed. QUESTION: I am unable to get paint to adhere satisfactorily to the house in which I live. I use the best quality paints, yet now it is beginning to peel again. I have been advised to use shellac by one person—an undercoat of aluminum paint by another person. Can you offer a solution to my problem?—A.L.M., Roanoke, Va. ANSWER: The advice you received is sound in both cases. Shellac and aluminum paint are excellent wood sealers and should cure the paint peeling problem. Be sure to remove all old and defective paint before application of either of these undercoats. QUESTION: Can you tell me how to refinish a mirror that has spots showing through from the back which mar the clear vision? There must be some solution for this purpose. —A.W., Reedsburg, Wisconson ANSWER: The only real cure is resilvering your mirror. This is a professional job requiring special equipment, including a tank large enough to contain the mirror, plus knowledge of proper chemical mixtures. Oxidation of the silvering coat causes the black spots. You can scrape the loose material away at these points, cover the area with aluminum foil held down with clear shellac, but the patchwork will show.

Lewis, in addition to his daily CBS shows, is also starring in “Charley’s Aunt” in summer theatres. . . .
