Batter C«M»eaeeaieat Week Activities Butler University’s Commencement week activities, beginning Sunday, June 1 and continuing through June 9, were announced yesterday by President M. O. Ross. Highlights of the week will be the 97th annual Commencement address by John S. Millis, president of Western Reserve University at Cleveland, Ohio. Commencement will be at 10 a.m. June 9 in Butler’s football stadium. The Baccalaureate address will be given by the Rev. Waymon Parsons, pastor of the Heights ‘Qiristian Church at Shaker Heights, Ohio, at 4 p.m. Sunday, .June 8. First event for the week will “be the Commencement of the John Herron Art School, an affiliate of Butler, at 3 p.m. June 1. ' Friday, June 6, at 11 a.m. will be the commissioning ceremony by Butler’s Air Force R.O.T.C. Unit on the parade grounds adjacent to Jordan Hall. y \ Another highlight of the week jjwill be Alumni Day Saturday, jjune 7. -i Included on the program is a of the university’s board -Jof directors in the Atherton Center. At 2:30 p.m. will be the Scarlet Quill alumnae tea in the home of Mrs. Dorothy Helmer, 402 W. Buckingham Drive. At 3 p.m. will be reunions of Jordan College of Music graduates and reunions of the classes of 1922 and 1932. Nine other class reunions are scheduled for the afternoon. 1 of the day will be the official dedication of the J. I. Holcomb Garden House in Butler’s Holcomb Gardens. The beautiful stone house is being used for meetings of various garden groups, Butler clubs and off-cam-pus organizations. • The day’s activities will end with an alumni dinner at 5:30 p.m. in the Atherton Center and a program following. Golden legion medals will be issued to attending members of the class of 1902 and silver anniversary certificates will go to the class of 1927.

New Butler Evening Class Butler University’s Evening Division has announced a new course of eight lectures on the adult education level entitled “Do You Know the Stars?” The* lectures will be presented by Dr. Harry E. Crull, head of the mathematics department and Director of the University College, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, -starting July 9. The course is designed to give an appreciation and understanding of the celestial universe. Use will be made of the Butler telescope, the planetarium and the extensive collection of lantern slides. . Another special feature of the class is a trip to the Link Observatory, Brooklyn, Indiana, to look through the 36’ telescope there. A young man whose father had been hanged was struggling with a life insurance application form. After the usual questions about hereditary diseases there was one asking for the causes of death of his parents. He wrote: “Mother died of pneumonia; father was taking part in a public function when the platform gave way.”

Morse G. Dial, President of Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation announced today the appointment of Howard S. Bunn as President of the Bakelite Company and Thomas D. Cartledge as President of the Linde Air Products Company. Both of these companies are divisions of Union Carbide. Mr. Cartledge succeeds Stanley B. Kirk, who becomes Chairman of Linde Air Products Company, while Mr. Bunn succeeds James W. McLaughlin, who becomes Bakelite’s Chairman. Both Mr. Cartledge and Mr. Bunn have directed sales activities of their respective companies, Mr. Cartledge as Senior VicePresident of Linde, and Mr. Bunn as Vice-President in charge of sales of the Thermoplastic Division of Bakelite. Mr. Cartledge was bom in Jefferson, Ga., and attended Erskine College in South Carolina. He entered the United States Navy as an enlisted man at the beginning of World War I and rose through the ranks to Lieutenant (j.g.) Upon leaving the service, he was employed b f Linde in 1920 as a salesman, assigned to a Cleveland territory. Within a short while, Mr. Cartledge was appointed District Manager in Kansas City, and later he held the same post in Dallas.

In 1925 he was transferred to Linde’s General Sales Management staff in New York, and later he became Manager, Gas Sales. After holding the positions of Assistant General Sales Manager, and General Sales Manager, in 1940 he became Vice-President. Four years later he became Senior Vice-President, Director, and member of the Executive Committee of the Linde Air Products Company. He is also Vice-Presi-dent of Dominion Oxygen Company, Limited, a Union Carbide subsidiary. Mr. Bunn entered the Carbide organization in 1922 as a salesman of alloy specialties for the chemical industry. After several years as an advertising writer, he became Advertising Manager for Carbide and Carbon Chemicals Company. Later he became Manager of the Pyrofax Division of that Company. In 1938 he was appointed Manager of the Plastics Division of Carbide and Carbon Chemicals. In 1944 Mr. Bunn was made Vice-President, Plastics Division of Carbide and Carbon Chemicals Company, and Vice-President in charge of sales, Thermoplastics Division of Bakelite Company. He is a Director and Vice-President of Bakelite Company (Canada), a Director of Bakelite Limited, and a Director of U.S. Testing Company.

Mr. Bunn was bom in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1899. He was graduated from Lehigh University in 1920 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry,'and in 1922 the same university awarded him the degree of Chemical Engineer. ANNUAL ROSE SHOW SET FOR JUNE 8 The Third Annual Rose Show, to be held at Holiday Park, 6349 Spring Mill Rd., and sponsored by the Indianapolis Rose Society, is open to all garden club members and rose fanciers. Exhibits will be received between 8:30 and 11 p.m., Sunday, June 8. Mrs. Norvin Strickland is general chairman for the event. The show will be open to the public from 2 to 6 p.m. There will be no admission fee. As rescuers untangled a motorist from the wreckage of a jalopy, telephone pole and wires, he reached out feebly, fingered the wires and murmured: “Thank heavens I lived a clean life, they’ve given me a harp.”
