Navy’s XA2J-1 “Savage” Successful first flight of the Navy’s XA2J-1 North American “Savage” in Los Angeles, January 4th, brought to four the number of turbo-prop powered aircraft now flying in this country. All four are powered by Allison T3B or T4O turbo-prop engines. First use of the Allison turboprop engine was in the Navy’s Convair Flying Boat early in 1950. Closely following were the Navy A2D Douglas “Skyshark,” the Allison “Turbo-Liner built by Convair, and now the new “Savage.”

Two Allison T4O turbo-prop engines produce more than 11,000 equivalent shaft horsepower for the North American XA2J-1. Rated at over 5500 equivalent shaft horsepower at a weight of only 2500 pounds, the T4O is the most powerful propeller type aircraft engine for its size and weight in the world. Designed as a twin-unit engine, the T4O is made up of two identical power sections which are connected by extension drive shafts to a single reduction gear. With this system both units can be used for high power requirements, ,and for economical cruise one unit can be shut off entirely. When only one unit is being used, both con-tra-rotating propellers turn through a unique gearing arrangement in the reduction gear housing. Use of extension shafting permits location of the engines at the point most favorable for airplane design and still allows location of propellers at the point of highest efficiency.
Ground tests have indicated the engine installation in the XA2J-1 is extremely accessible and well arranged for easy carrier maintenance. Also indicated is the fact that the turbo-prop engines supply a very high initial static thrust which is ideal for the short takeoff carrier type operation. Allison also manufactures the J 33 and J 35 turbo-jet engines which power many of our nation’s modern combat jet aircraft. Big Business In 1870, America had 427,000 independent commercial and industrial enterprises which equaled one tor each 91 persons. In 1947 America had 2,280,000 businesses, one ter each 63 people. So, in spite oi our big businesses, we have • larger number of small businesses even in proportion to our population.

Tke Price of Foghorns In one of feu Washington columns, Steffan Andrews of the North American Newspaper Alliance quoted a Congressman as saying: “In the ten commandments there are 297 words, in Lincoln’s Gettysburg address 266 words, but in an OPS order setting ceiling prices bn manually operated foghorns there are 12,962 words.
No one would expect the ma/ ter-minds at OPS to produce anything within cannon shot of the ten commandments or the Gettysburg address. But the OPS order on the vital subject of foghorn prices is a perfect example of how the bureaucrats work, once they get a taste of power. The red-tape gets thicker and thicker. The orders become more and more verbose and, of course, more and more difficult to understand and follow. Some df the OPS orders, in fact, have been masterpieces of utter confusion. The people who make and sell foghorns undoubtedly spent some sleepless nights trying to get their teeth into OPS’ long order. And they aren’t the only ones. It’s a safe bet that there isn’t a producer or a distributor in the country who hasn’t gone around talking to himself after reading one or another of OPS’ literary efforts. Some of them, indeed, proved to be totally unworkable, and OPS had to hustle out changes and amendments. In a situation like this, every producer and merchant becomes willy-nilly, a law breaker. And if anyone thinks that such a situation helps the consumer, he should think again. More and more of the time, effort and money of manufacturer, retailer and all others involved must be given to trying to untangle the red-tape and to following the orders as best they can. That’s one way to hamstring an economy. —lndustrial News Review.
