' St. Christopher's Catholic Church ' 5335 West 16th Street Rev. L. A Lindemann Pastor Silnday Masses: 6:00 o’clock Members of the Holy Name Society enjoyed a very interesting talk by Judge Ober Sunday morning. The newly elected officers for 1952 are Leonard Benedetto, president; James Breen, vic-prsidnt; James W. Schneider, secretary; and Oscar Bender, treasurer. These men will take office in February at which time Mr. Benedetto will announce his different committees for the year. All couples, young and old, interested in Square Dancing were invited to attend a meeting Tuesday night of this week in the School Hall to determine whether or not there were enough interested, so that a purely social dance could be held ip st Christopher Hall once a week. These dances would not be intended to make money toward the church debt, but would be solely to make for a better family, parish life: however, of course, there would have to be enough interested couples who would come and bring their friends to carry the expenses of a profession caller and music. High Masses this week ... on Tuesday morning at 8 o’clock for Thomas -Vogle requested by the family, and sung by the children; on Wednesday morning at 6 o’clock for Mary Ann Bische, requested by employees of Allison; and, on Thursday morning at 6 o’clock, for the Poor Souls according to a special intention. Just finished talking with Marion Arnold, the new president of the Altar Society, and we’re all excited about the plans the officers and various committee chairmen have for the Society’s activities for the year. Of course, there will be the regular monthly meetings on the first Wednesday nighx at 8 P.M. of every month to which every lady who is a member of St. Christopher Church or whose husband is a member of St. Christopher Church is invited to attend whether she can be active or not. At the February meeting, February 6th, there is to be another WHITE ELEPHANT SALE. Everybody had such a good time at the first White Elephant Sale, they’re asking for another. There will be only a short business meeting. Any member may bring guests to this meeting. More next week, but do save that night open. Mrs. Jeanne Knight is Chairman and Mrs. Rosie Aust is Co-chairman. Mesdames Rose Ann Tyner, Rosemary Aull, Pat Scheurer, and Mary Zaepfel will help on the committee. Then on February 21st, Thursday, A CHILI SUPPER is scheduled. A newly organized MERCHANDISE CLUB will begin sometime in February. Mrs. Helen Riedy has offered to act again as chairman. Mrs. Emma Jean Rosner is co-chairman. During Lent there will be the LENTEN BASKETS, something new for this Parish. We hope somebody brings us a coffee-cake, pie, or something for our dog collection when they bring l basket to tftXJi - . t " **' r ~ An opportunity to make a spring RETREAT, March 14th, 15th, and 16th, at the Fatima Retreat House in Indianapolis will be offered. And they hope to have a BOOK'REVIEW in March. After Lent, in April a Bake Sale and the Spring Roundup for the children. A Smorgsboard in May, and a Mother and Daughter Communion Breakfast. And of course, a Spring Rummage Sale in April or early May . . . start saving things, because you know the ladies must have things to sell if they are to make fifty or sixty dollars. - Nothing is planned yet for June, July, or August .. . except the ANNUAL LAWN FESTIVAL. And sometime'in the Fall, we’ll be digging out our Rummage for another sale. October is to be the big CARD PARTY month. And we’ll be taking our sons to the Mother and Son Communion Breakfast either in September or October. / The traditional TURKEY DINNER the Sunday 'before Thanksgiving in November! j And again the children are remembered in the planning . . . their Christmas party in December.Of course, we’ll have a lot more to tell you as the plans unfold. Mrs. Montgomery of the Propagation of the Faith gave a very interesting and enlightening talk at the January meeting of the Society. C.Y.O. meetings are held each Monday night in the School Hall. In January, from the 18th (the Feast of St. Peter’s Chair in Rome) to the 25th inclusive (the Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul), the Chorch sets aside eight days for the observance of the Chair of Unity Octave. At this time the faithful are asked to pray that all those separated from the Church may be brought into the true fold of Christ. Pray for the conversion of Russia and for the conversion of the communists of China and all over the world. Pray for Unity and Peace . . . for it is written ... “if a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.” St. Mark 3:24. —Nora Bray. -

School News The School Board in a meeting Monday night, January 14, took steps to assure the completion of the present construction of Elementary School No. 2 at 18th and Whitcomb Streets. The contracts awarded in January of 1951 included basic construction of the present unit. The contracts approved Monday night included asphalt tile floors, painting and decorating, light fixtures, drives and walks, plumbing fixtures, cabinet work, chalkboards, and other finishing items. During the next few months the contractors will complete this present unit which includes four classrooms, a large all-purpose room, offices, storerooms, and a heating plant of sufficient capacity to care for the four additional rooms which will be built on the south end of the present structure as soon as funds .are available. This will probably be done in 1953. '
Plans are now being made for the use of four classrooms in this building beginning with the opening of the school term this fall. These will probably house kindergarten, first, second, and third grade pupils who live in the northwest part of Speedway. About one-third of our total enrollment in these grades will be assigned to the new school. The other two thirds will continue to attend at Elementary Schoql No. 1 at Fourteenth and Winton Streets. When the building at 18th and Whitcomb is completed in 1953, pupils in grades K-6 in the northwest part of town will attend the new school
