SPARKPLUG’S RACE TOO FAST FOR QUAKERS, 35 TO 7 by David Ketron Speedway’s titanic Sparkplugs ended Plainfield’s hopes of becoming giant killers by disposing of the Quakers 35-7, on the Plugs’ home turf, Friday night. Ronnie Vance squirmed and danced his way through a host of Quaker tacklers time after time to score one of the Sparkplug’s five touchdowns and help them obtain some of their 13 first downs. Lloyd Young tallied for Plainfield in the opening moments and Ken Ward found the uprights as the Quakers seemed inspired. But before the quarter had ended Kenny Lawson crossed the chalk stripe and Dick Stumph had booted a placement to tie the count at seven all. Dick Stumph took a handoff from quarterback Dave Wilson to do all the scoring *in the second quarter. He also kicked his ownconversion. Ronnie Vance and Kenny Lawson both galloped through the Plainfield defense in the third quarter to tally as the “Plugs” rolled up 117 yards on the ground and 25 yards through the air. Dick Stumph did the post-touchdown honors on both key plays. Left half-back George Mayo was caught on the two-yard line in the fourth quarter after galloping 20 yards around right end. On the next play Mayo plowed across and Stumph again converted to end the scoring of the swift Sparkplugs, 35-7.
