Indian Gu|de Tribe Organized In Speedway One of the first Y.M.CA Indian Guide Tribes in Marion County has been organized in Speedway. Lester Helser, 4927 West Fourteenth Street has been named Chief of the tribe. Other officers are: William Hackett, 1880 Norfolk Street, Tally-Keeper, Lester Smith, 4958 W. 14th Street, Wam-pum-keeper, Douglas Trosky, 4965 W. 13th Street, Indian Runner, Lester Smith Jr., 4958 W. 14th Street, Tom-Tom Beater. Indiana Guides is a Y.M.C.A. father-son organization to help fathers keep in close relationship with their sons. Boys and their fathers join the organization together. Neither are permitted to come to meetings without the other.
IHE SPEEDWAY FLYER
Joe Friday, an Ojibwa Indian and a Y.M.C.A. secretary started the organization in St. Louis several years ago. It is based on the Indians tribal father-son relationship. An Indian father trained his son from childhood and did not permit others to do this important tribal duty. The boy learned from the father to hunt, fish, withstand pain and keep the code of his tribe. In that simple process of being together the Indian found a way to be close to his boy. The Y. M. C. A. Indian Guides are formed on a similar pattern with the father and son playing and working together. The Big Braves (the fathers) and the Little Braves (their sons) each adopt an Indian name which describes themselves. Before admission to the tribe the father and son must do some craft project together and certain offices in the tribe are open to fathers and others to the sons. Some of the programs within the tribes are hdhdicraft, storytelling, trips to historical spots, bridge-building, stamp collecting, nature study, archery, riflery and other things which the boys and their fathers want to do. Braves interested in forming another tribe in this community are requested to see Frank Vincent at the West side branch of the Y.M.C.A., Be. 9421.
