Service Men’s* Center Plans Christmas Party The Indiananolis Service Men’s Center will give a party for the Service Men of Camp Atterbury on Christmas Eve at the World War Memorial, 431 North Meridian Street. Since most of the men’s leaves have been revoked, a record over flowing attendance is expected. General Christmas Tree decorations are needed—popcorn balk and strings, second hand tinsel, paper rings (Attention Giri Scouts and Camp Fire Girls), etc.
Women of Moose Honor Treasurer The Women of the Moose honored their treasurer, Hilda Switzer, who filled the office many years at Chapter 11, with a party on December 11. The speaker of the evening was 'grand regent Phylis Doyle. Entertainment was given by Gladys Bailey and her sister, Katie Calahan. Twelve candidates were initiated into the defending circle. Hoosier Collegiate Basketball Classic Indiana’s greatest basketball show, the Hoosier Collegiate Basketball Classic, will go on stage at the Butler Fieldhouse Friday and Saturday nights (Dec. 22-23) with Butler, Indiana, Purdue, and Notre Dame again playing the leading roles. The fourth renewal of this giant, crowd-luring spectacle will see Notre Dame and Purdue open the first night’s (Dec. 22) fireworks at 7:45 p.m., with Indiana’s Hunryin* Hoosiers and Butler, last year’s finalists, following at 9:30 p,m. On Saturday (Dec. 23) the lineups will reverse, with Purdue and Butler battling in the lid-lifter and Indiana and Notre Dame closing the holiday season attraction. Coachßranch McCracken’s high-flying Hoosiers have been elevated to the role of favorites in pre-Classic speculations with Notre Dame their chief threat, Purdue and Butler serving as the darkhorses.
The Hoosiers have virtually the same combination which last? year overpowered Notre Dame, 79-89, and Butler, 68-57, to capture their first Classic crown. Jerry. Stuteville and Lou Watson, who were selected to the All-Tourney team in 1949, have departed, but nine returning lettermen, paced by rangy center Bill Garrett ’ and guards Gene Ring and Bill Tbsheff, have demonstrated that they can get along without them. Butler’s Bulldogs, mythical champions of two or three Classics to date, rate no more than an underdog this year. Last year’s graduation of Buckshot O’Brien, the Classic’s greatest scorer, and Jimmy Doyle, top play-maker, has drained the very substances which in the past have made them a perennial winner. Only Shorty Burdsall has returned from the combination which took the floor against Purdue a year ago. Notre Damb, which has always emerged with a .500 record since the Classic’s origin in 1947, looms as the biggest threat to Indiana’s chances for a second diadem. The Irish have lost All-American Kevin O'Shea, always a Classic favorite with fans and a great performer, and John Foley, but forwards Dan Bagley and Leroy Leslie, with guard Don Strasser, are returning and could prove dangerous.
Purdue's Boilermakers are still seeking their first Classic victory after having failed in six consecutive - attempts. Ray Eddy, who has replaced Mel Taube as head coach, is depending on a batch of | juniors and sophomores to help regain some of their lost prestige. Shouldering most of the burden thus far have been forwards Carl McNulty, top-scorer, and Darrel Brewster, and guards Glen Bahler and Norman Greiner. Butler has compiled the best over-all won-lost record in the three years the Classic has been staged. The Bulldogs have copped five of six games, losing only last year to Indiana. Indiana has triumphed four times while receiving twin reverses at Butler's expense. Notre Dame has topped Purdue three times and been stopped by Indiana three times. Scores of past Classic games follow: 1047-40 Butler 52, Purdue BO Butler 84, Indiana 51 Notre Dame 42, Purdue 40 Indiana 72, Notre Dame 48 1848-4 B Butler 84, Indiana SB Butler 47, Purdue 48 Notre Dame 81, Purdue B 0 Indiana 50, Notre Dame 4T ’ 1040-00 Butler 57, Purdue 82 Indiana 68, Butler ST Notre Dame 50.
