ATHLETE'S FOOT With the renewal of school, the old danger of infection with athlete’s foot presents itself. The parasite causing the disease lurks in warm, damp areas such as dressing, shower and bathroom floors. Students mingling in dressing rooms increase the exposure, so proper precautions to protect the feet should be taken. This skin disease, also known as ringworm of the foot, is spread by persons who may not be aware that they have the infection. The fungus often survives in a dry state from six months to a year. It resembles an ordinary household mold and affects the outer layers of the skin between the toes. There are blisters and intense itching. The skin peels, and sores and cracks appear between the toes. Floors and benches in school dressin? rooms should be scrubbed daily with soap and hot water to elim’nate athlete’s foot eerms Creosol solution can also be used ’effectively. A person should take three precautions to avoid infection—bathe the feet daily, dry them well, and dust them with a bm?icidal powder. A person affected should place the shoes in the sun for four or five hours and not wear them for 24 hours. Wh’te cotton hose that have been sterilised bv boiling should be worn. Do not
