P.TJL PAPER SALE OCT. 18 Scout News Speedway scouts are jumping right into their fall program by having an overnight hike to Camp Belzer on Saturday, September 23 starting from the Lutheran Church at 1:00 p.m. Bring scout uniform to wear to church and food for three meals. The group will return home about 2:00 p.m. Sunday. Fathers welcome! Those attending the Scout picnic last Saturday seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. The, fathers won the “father and son” ball game despite the handicap of “Pop-up” Hoerger and umpiring (?) of Fred Scott. However, it was a good thing the game only lasted five innings. That the food was enjoyed was proved by the empty picnic baskets we carried home. The growing boys (Winfield Wood and Adolph Moser) saw to that. At the campfire several games were played to demonstrate scouting skills. A “flint and steel” fixe building contest was won. by Glen Higgins (the younger). The advancements made at summer camp were recognized. Glen Higgins, Ray Parsons, Jerry Graybill, George Dryer, Larry Henderson, Billy Sanders, Junior Moser, Fred Scott became second class scouts; Wayne Armentrout became first class, George Thompson, Larry Thomas, John Dryer and Bob Robbin obtained canoeing and pioneering merit badges and Larry Thomas received his star rank. Brier talks were given on our scout program for the year and the benefits of scouting to the boys in their test passing and camping.
