Beginning Sunday, Sept. 17, big pro gridiron contests will be aired from coast to coast regularly for the first time in radio’s history, with every game of the New York Yanks, at home and away, being broadcast directly from the field. The announcement was made jointly by Ted Collins, owner of the New York Yankees professional football team, and Gordon McLendon, President of the Liberty Broadcasting System. that the New York Yankees, both in baseball and football, are most nearly America’s favorite team.” Opponents in the series will be the Green Bay Packers, Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco FortyNiners, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, New York Giants and Baltimore Colts. MIKE NOTES: Pretty young Patricia Wheel, who plays “Jocelyn McLeod,” the new femme lead on the NBC daytimer “The Road of Life,” admits that her childhood goal was not to become an actress. Pat won fame as a child artist and joined a stock theater company as its stage designer and odd-jobber—which included occasional subbing for ailing actresses. Regular actresses’ ailments grew so numerous that Pat found herself doing more on the stage than to it, and what’s more, she liked it! So much so, that she devoted all of her energies to the drama — and thus a new daytime serial queen was bom! . . . Ben Grauer, commentator on the NBC-TV News Caravan—which is headed by John Cameron Swayze will enter the theatrical production field this fall He’s forming a professional theatre group to offer plays at the Bleecker Street Thea-
tre in New York City. . . . It’s reported that Frank Sinatra will have a weekly budget of $40,000 for his new CBS-TV series which debuts this fall . . . Barbara Weeks returned last week to her role as “Anne Malone” on the CBS daytime serial ‘Young Dr. Malone” following a month’s sojourn in California. WATTS WATT: Rhoda Williams, who plays Betty, the Andersons’ daughter, in NBC’s comedy drama, “Father Knows Best,” and June Whitley, who portrays Mrs. Anderson, recently were chosen as bathing beauty models for a “Warm Weather Fashion Parade,” staged by a group of Hollywood people, thus making Father Anderson (Robert Young) pretty proud of his girls! . . . Glamor is not for June Hiett of Texas, who has just resigned a lucrative singing job as one of the Moon Maids on the Vaughn Monroe Show over CBS Saturday nights, because “I wanted to quit while I was still young. I don’t want a career all my life. I want my friends, my books, my sewing, a home.” June was a member of the Monroe troupe for four years. ... Warren Hull, em cee of the CBS “Strike It Rich” program, asked a woman in his audience what her husband did. “He’s an efficiency expert,” said the woman. “The kind of man who says his prayers once a year, New Year’s Days The rest of the time he just jumps into bed and says ‘Ditto’.” LIVE WIRES: Lanny Ross flew to Nashville, Tenn., for a special concert engagement following his MBC broadcast last Friday. It represented his third summer concert within a month. . . . ABC “Breakfast Club” singing star Johnny Desmond has a grand new M-G-M platter. We like “Just Say I Love Her,” which is backed by
