James Fleming, announcer on the NBC-TV Caravan, is on familiar ground when news and films of the Korean war come in. During World War II Fleming was assigned to the radio section of General MacArthur’s PRO in Manila and Tokyo. After the war he traveled extensively through the Far East with a tape recorder gathering material and interviews. ... Radio Troubadour Lanny Ross has been engaged to sing at a Welsh Folk Festival in Pottsville, Penn., Monday Aug. 28. The event will be staged in the local armory before an audience of 6,000. . . . Lauritz Melchoir, the noted opera singer, says the current headlines indicate once again that war is better at abolishing nations than nations are at abolishing wars!
HORSES, HORSES During a dress rehearsal for the premiere performance of the “Robert Q. uewis Show” (CBS-TV, Sunday nights at 9 p.m,., E.D.T.), Robert Q. made his entrance on a small horse. The spectators thought it was hilarious, but to our hero it wasn’t funny. He threw his sacroiliac out of place and was almost crippled to the point of not being able to go on. Faced with the prospect of carrying on or being carried out, Robert Q. followed the best “show must go on” tradi-

tion. One of the stagehands was heard to remark that it was the first time he had ever seen a com&ian work at half mast in order to keep his audience bent double. He’s still in pain, but his affinity for horses remains unabated. He allowed the third race at Monmouth to be called “The Robert Q. Lewis Purse,” a couple of weeks ago. Haven’t heard how much he lost!
MIKE NOTES CBS Newscaster Lowell Thomas is set to return to his regular Monday through Friday news spot on Monday, Aug. 21. In the meantime, Lowell is enjoying his vacation at his Pawling, N.Y., farm. . . . When “Strike It Rich,” the program with a heart, celebrated its third birthday on CBS, creator-producer Walt Framer threw a champagne party for the staff in his offices. Then he spent most of the time working on questions for the next day’s broadcast. . . . Abby Lewis, heard in the role of “Ada Overton,” wealthy matron, on NBC’s daytimer “The Road of Life,” made an immediate hit when she arrived in New York from New Mexico. Abby now averages one radio show a day, six days a week! TELEVIEWS: Both Evelyn Varden and Berry Kroeger, regularly heard as “Mother Malone” and “Sam Williams” in the CBS daytime serial “Young Dr. Malone,” scored feature roles in TV dramas last week. Miss Varden was seen in the NBC-TV “Circle Theatre”

production, and Kroeger played the lead role in CBS-TV’s mystery “The Web.” Neither are newcomers to television, nor to any other thespian medium for that matter. Kroeger played "Casca” in the recently closed Broadway revival of Shakespeare’s “Julius Ceasar,” starring Basil Rathbone, and his last Hollywood chore was “Guilty of Treason.” Miss Varden, veteran stage and screen actress will be seen in the soon to be released 20th Century Fox film “Stella.” Radio for both dates back to the “$7.50 a show” days. At one time or another they’ve had roles in practically every major network show going!
WATT’S WATT: Some singers may lean on a microphone for support but Red Foley leans on a guitar. The “Grand Ole Opry” baritone star has good reason for his confession that “I just can’t sing without my guitar in my hands,” —he has been playing the instrument since he was nine years old! . . . Vaughn Monroe, the CBS star, tells of the pupil who was asked to write a short verse using the words analyze and anatomy. Here’s what he produced: “My analyze over the ocean. My analyze over the sea. My analyze over the ocean. O, bring back my anatomy!” . . . Gloria De Haven, the movie starlet, is now a Decca record star. Her first platter, “Don’t Bfe Afraid” and “There Isn’t Very Much To Do Now,” both look like hits on the Disc Parades! THE RADIO NEWSREEL: NBC is trying to tie-up both Jimmy Durante and Danny Kaye for its TV network this fall. . . . CBS Comic Jack Benny is breaking records at London’s Palladium. Phil Harris, Alice Faye and Rochester co-star with him. . . . Veteran Newscaster Everett Hoiles will air an MBS commentary every Saturday afternoon. . . .
Two of a Kind ? Young men as well as young [women today look forward to a career tn nursing. In Chicago’s great medical center the wHtecoated figures of men students are a familiar sight as they share recIreation as well as classroom hours [with the girls. | A recent merger of the Cook .County School of Nursing with the University of Illinois makes this the largest center for nursing education in the United States—if not the world. What this merger means to the student is a new course which ■will lead to a Bachelor of Science degree from the university and a diploma in nursing from the school. There is also the regular three year course in nursing. } A unique training ground is provided by Cook County Hospital. This great institution has 3,400 beds, and the student in a three i year course has the opportunity to observe most of the cases contained in them. i But nursing is not all work. In the modern residence across the way there is home life with plenty of fun in it, and time for hobbies too. Classes convene in March and September. /
