Local Employment Increased Last Month Another upward step in the continuing climb of local employment figures was reported today by S. S. Springer, manager of the Indiana Employment Security Division’s Indianapolis office. Approximately 2,600 persons who applied at the local office in June were hired, compared with 2,426 placed in jobs during May of this year, and 1,312 in June of last year. Total placements for the first half of 1950 amounted to 10,086, compared with 7,243 hired in the first six months of 1949. Increased employment last month was noted chiefly in fabricated metals and electrical products, in the construction industry where most of the openings called for skilled workers, and in agriculture on seasonal jobs such as setting, blocking tomato plants and picking strawberries. Although work applications in June increased 478 over May, Springer attributed this to the registration of graduates seeking permanent jobs and undergraduates wanting temporary work during school vacation. However, there were fewer active applications on file at the end of June than on May 31, and less than half the number of workers available at the close of June, 1949. Employers in the Indianapolis area listed 3,220 new jobs with the Division’s local office last month, slightly higher than the 3,207 received in May and more than double the jobs listed in June a

Only 2,940 new claims were filed last month, compared with 2,417 in May; and 13,107 continued claims were handled in June, while May figures totaled 18,728. From a statistical standpoint there will be an increase in the number of persons filing for unemployment compensation during the next two or three months but actually, Springer says, this will not be a true gauge of local unemployment, since many of the claimants will be persons temporarily laid off because of the plantwide vacation policy instituted in a number of large industries.
