SCHOOLNEWS (Continued from page 1) be ready for the first day of school is uncertain but it should be completed no later than October. All teachers, except those directing 4-H and band activities, will complete their work Saturday morning, June 10. Custodians and the administrative staff will remain on the job most of the summer completing records and reports, doing maintenance work, and making plans for the opening of school this fall. Work will be started next week on replacing the floors in two rooms on the first floor of the elementary building. The new floors will be concrete covered with asphalt tile. Speedway Sparklers Win Third Straight Game By 15-9 Count The Speedway Sparklers Junior Baseball Team played their third open game of the season last Sunday at the Speedway ball diamond against the Haughville Wildcats, a group of boys from around St. Anthony’s Church. Jim Woods-star pitcher for the Sparklers was relieved in the third inning after walking three men and allowing seven runs to score for the Wildcats. The Sparklers tied the score in the last inning and Houpt let two men on with only one out. Jimmy Stumph took over the mound without any warm up and did his usual good job of being a strike out artist increasing his total to 15 strike outs for 8 innings of preleague play. The Sparklers ran in 6 markers in the overtime inning to win the game for Jimmie Stumph. Next game will be tonight at the Brookside Park at 4:00 p.m. against the Junior Indians of Brookside. The last pre-league game >will be played Sunday afternoon at 2:30 on the Speedway diamonds. The Riverside Class C league will get under way next Tuesday morning at 9:00 a.m.

Tonight the Merchants meet Tydol Oil at 7:00 p.m. at Municipal Stadium. This should be a bang-up game as Tydol Oil is considered one of the better teams in the city. This week the Merchants are honoring Backemeyer’s Grocery and Speedway Pastries as two of the concerns who are helping to back the fine ball club.
