Butler To Dedicate NewßaiMhiff January 9 has been set as the opening date for Butler University’s ultra-modern new $1,060,000 John Whistler Atherton Center for campus activities, President M. O. Ross announced today. Dedication ceremonies are to be held at a later date, he said. The new building located at the corner of Hampton Drive and Clarendon Road on the Fairview campus, has been under construction since May, 1948. It will house the university cafertia, bookstore, Campus Chib grill, lounges, recreation rooms, and club rooms for student organizations. AH units will move into their new quarters during the Christmas vacation period, Robert Newton, director of the center, indicated.

Designed by the architectural firm of McGuire and Shook and built by the Service Construction Company, the three floor unit resembles the Arthur Jordan Memorial hall and is located 200 feet to the south of the latter building. Ground floor of the Center will house the Campus Club with seating facilities for approximately 400, a billiard room including two pocket billiard tables, one snooker table, and one billiard table; a table tennis room, the bookstore, and rest room facilities, Mr. Newton said. The second floor of the new structure will house the cafeteria, a faculty dining room, two private dining rooms, an all-electric kitchen, storage facilities, a “browsing room,” student lounge, and two cloak rooms. University organizations to be housed in the latter rooms include the Butler Independent Association, the Newman Club, the Association of Women Students, the Alumni Association, the YMCA and YWCA, the Interfraternity Council, the Panhellenic Association, the Religious Council, and the Drift, junior class yearbook. Complete dark room photographic facilities afforded by the Drift room will be made available to the students and faculty. A faculty lounge will complete the third floor.
