O’er The Hills OUR INDIANS THE CHAMPIONS Our Indians, mess tneir aging hearts, are the champions of all triple A baseball. They fought, as no other team fought, in the history of the American Association. From the very beginning of the season our Indians had as their goal, the championship of the AA. Then when everything seemed doomed to defeat they came roaring down the stretch. Seven games remained, and the tribe trailed by five and one half games. From the bat-boy to the president of the club, hope still reigned. The pennant went right down to the final out of that game up there in Milwaukee. St. Paul had just enough steam left to pull the flag out of the fire. The loss of the pennant and the sudden let-down must have taken a lot out of the fighting Indians. They lost three in a row to the Millers. Who of us would have bet a wooden nickel for their chances of coming through with four straight in the enemy stronghold?
If I were to ask you the following question, how would you answer it? The question is: “Where was the turning point in the playoffs, that brought victory to the Indians?” There was one play in one inning of a game in Minneapolis that turned defeat into victory. Put this picture in your mind. Two out, bases loaded Score board reads: Millers 3; Indians 2. The pitcher comes to bat (a guy named Bailey). He promptly parks a triple down the left field line. Three Millers scampered across the plate and the score read Millers 6; Indians 2. But wait a minute, Femandiz is calling for the ball from Conway. He steps on third base and claims a put-out of Harshman, who had failed to touch the base as he made the turn for home plate. As a result all three rune were nullified. The Tribe went on to win 9-8. Had Harshmar touched the bag the Tribe woulc have lost the fourth game 11-9 From there the Indians went on to win both play-off series, anc enter the championship series You know the rest. We, the fans of the Indians wish to take this opportunity tc thank owners rank McKinney and Ownie Bush for giving us a championship team of which we are justly proud. To manager Al Lopez we send this message. To you Al, we fans have a great amount of respect for the manner in which you moulded the team into a fighting unit. No amount of adjectives can describe the types of appreciation we have for you and “Your Boys.” The least we can say is “Thanks a million Senior Lopez.” Last but not least we wish to thank Luke Walton for his colorful blow-by-blow broadcasts of all the games played by the Tribe. Luke, we want you to know that we enjoyed every minute and every word of each broadcast. You had that little knack of giving us a little laugh just when things began to get tense. We hope to see and hear you back in front of the WISH mike in 1950 for more of those STERLING broadcasts. Again we say “Thank you Luke.”

October By Violet Phelps We who live in Indiana At this season of the year, Have so much to be thankful for And there much our hearts to cheer. October comes forth in her beauty, Though the fields are brown and sear. * The trees stand forth like large boquets, We see beauty far and near. The artist sees God in nature. His hand responds to the cry of his soul. We sometimes wish we were an artist, And could thus have our thoughts under control. It’s wonderful to be an artist, To have an artist’s skill, But no matter how beautiful the picture, He admits there’s something lacking still. When one can really drink in this 11 beauty From the hills and woods first I hand Then you know God’s in His | Heaven As you see—“ The Touch of The Master’s Hand.” As we look upon this beauty, On the hills and in the wood. We just can’t help knowing—- “ God, is Great,” and “God is Good” What this country needs is a good snappy, elastic currency—the kind that will stretch when we buy and shrink when we sell.
