Speedway Men’s Softball On Thursday evening. Sept 1, the Lions and Kats finally got together for the final playoff of the tournament They decided that one game would tell the story, instead of a possible two, and the Kats came off the victors in an 8 to 5 battle. Thus, after qpite a siege of rainy weather and delayed games, the Speedway Men’s Softball League came to a successful close. Everybody had a lot of fun and that was the primary purpose in setting this league up. All those concerned cooperated in a full community spirit and things went along exceptionally well for the first attempt at such an enterprise. Every player has a head full of ideas for a bigger and better Speedway League next year and early next spring they will be given an opportunity to present those ideas. However, there are a couple of teams who still want to play softball as long as good weather lasts. Games will not be scheduled on a regular basis. Players will simply be notified well in advance when such a game has been cooked up. The management and players wish to take this opportunity to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to the following firms and persons who helped make the season so pleasant and successful: The Speedway School Board, Mr. R. C. Jordan, Speedway Town Board and Police Department, Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Pure Oil Service Station, Etters Service Station, Texaco Service Station, Lews Market, Fateley’s Garage, Bert Greatbatch, Backemeyer’s Grocery, A. & P. Grocery, Schoonover’s Hdw., Lyon’s Dept Store, Alexander’s sc-sl, Speedway Savings & Loan, Moldthan’s Real Estate and Insurance, Main Grill, Speedway Pharmacy, Beck’s Drug Store, Mary’s Market, and Oval Package Store. These donations bought pew bases and paid part of the umpire’s fee. The players bought all other equipment and paid part of the necessary umpire fee. Again thanks to everyone and a bigger and better league next year.

Electric Steel Castings Company Host To Speedway School Staff . ' As a contribution to wider public understanding of our country’s economic system, the Electric Steel Castings Company was host to the Speedway Public School System staff at a dinner meeting held in the Columbia Club Wednesday night, Aug. 31, and a plant visitation Thursday morning, Sept. 1. Included in the party were Superintendent Jordan, Principals Thompson and Northcott as well as the entire teaching staff of the high school and grade school, including . the eight teachers coming to Speedway this year for the first time. After dinner Wednesday night, Mr. Harlan, vice president and sales manager, remarked on the company’s activities, relating that the officers including Mr. I. R. Wagner, president; Mr. William B. Ziegelmueller and Mr. Harlan, vice president, and Mr. R. A. Thompson, secretary - treasurer, all lived in or near Speedway and vjere vitally interested in the community’s welfare, and presented a program illustrating the manufacture and use of the foundry’s product, steel castings. Several of the executives and supervisory personnel participated, including Mr. George Haislup, assistant sales manager, who told of some of the uses of steel cast-
ings, and Messrs. Charles Spenter, Paul Faulk, Fred Kurtz and Clarence Wiggam who explained some of the, manufacturing methods and techniques. Then Mr. R. A. Thompson explained features of investment, taxes and payrolls in operating the enterprise. Following this, a colored sound movie made sometime back in the plant, illustrating the facilities and methods of manufacture used, was shown. This movie has been used by many of the schools and other organizations through*: out the country and in several: foreign lands as an educational feature. Thursday morning the school staff of 37 visited the factory and saw the various equipment in operation, including the pouring of molten steel into the molds for making the many different shaped castings produced. The plant makes parts used in building agricultural and various heavy types of machinery, Bridges, ‘road building equipment, railroad locomotives and cars, and many other industrial applications. The products of the company are sold and distributed mainly throughout the mid-wes-tern states. The Indianapolis Chamber of Commerce sponsored a similar type of program between the Indianapolis teachers and industry. The purpose was to give the teachers in groups an opportunity to see behind the scenes of all types of businesses in our community, so that they could have a better understanding of business enterprise in action, and be able to better prepare those going to school for their future.

lings and Indianapolis veterans’ hospitals, as well as its welfare work for servicemen, veterans, and their dependents, are enough in themselves to continue to make a daily need for Red Cross volunteers.
