St. Christopher’s Catholic Chorch Rev. L. A. Lindemann Pastor Sunday Masses: ®:00 o’clock Weekday Masses o’clock The Young People of St Christopher will receive Holy Communion at the 8:30 o’clock Mass Sunday morning. Mr. and Mrs. George Grannan, Zada and George, and their children Janice and Don moved away from Speedway Monday morning to their new home at 408 North sth street, Vincennes, Indiana They lived at 1616 Norfolk. We all hated to see them go, but we send our best wishes with them. Congratulations to Helen and Charles Wolfla, a new girl. We didn’t get the news in time for last week’s Flyer. Merchandise for the new Merchandise Club which will be begun early in September will be on display at the LAWN FESTIVAL this weekend. If anyone is interested, they should stop at the booth and look the display over. You will not be asked to make any payment or sign any card. Merchandise Club memberships are not a gamble. You pay and you receive, if you’re lucky you don’t pay so much and you still receive. If you have never been a member of a Merchandise Club at St. Christopher or through any other organization or club, you should investigate it. The Cook Books, “Tops in Food,” will be on sale at the FESTIVAL —at their regular price SI.OO. The Committee is very pleased that their friends have received these books so well. They say—thanks. St. Christopher School is scheduled to open September 19. The ladies serving food at the FESTIVAL are trying out this year a plan whereby they hope to move the folks through the Big Tent more quickly and eliminate the standing in line so long. They are going to have two steam tables, thereby serving two lines through the tent instead of one. “Don’t use a weak excuse—it’s worn out before it’s half told.”—The Gilcrafter. Nora Bray.
Something New Has Been Added The Town has acquired two new picnic tables and benches which have been placed in the park. One in the shelter house and one on the grounds itself. These are for the convenience of those who like to bring their lunch to the park. Lack of ability is compensated _for by an excess of generosity—in dishing out advice and criticism.

NAVY VETERANS GET BONUS NEWS Indiana Navy veterans applying for their World War II bonus received welcome news in the form of a clarification announcement from the Bonus Division of the Indiana Department of Veterans Affairs concerning their original discharges. Clinton Green, director of the department, and Orville B. Bray, administrative officer of the World War II bonus, announced that navy veterans need not send their original form 660 providing they send the NAVPERS 553. This means that navy men will NOT have to send their “battleship” discharge paper if they have the “notice of separation from the JJ. S. Naval Service” in their possession. They must send the original of the latter form, or 553 as it is called, however, photostatic or certified copies will not be accepted. In the event the paper has been lost, a certificate in lieu of the lost separation paper can be obtained by making application to the Ninth Naval District, at Great Lakes, 111. All navy men were warned to be sure and check the number of their original notice of separation. The majority of navy veterans were issued the 553 form at time of discharge, which will be sufficient. However, all other navy veterans who were issued any other separation form rather than a, 553 will still have to send the original discharge paper number 660 along with the original separation paper. Marine Corps and Coast Guard veterans will also benefit by the ruling since many Marine Corps men have NAVMC form 78-PD, which is acceptable in its original form. Coast Guard men who have NAVCG form 553 need not send their other discharge paper. However, all Marine Corps and Coast Guard veterans were warned the same as navy veterans that they must have these particular forms in order to not have to send their original discharge blanks. If any of these veterans have forms of any other number, both papers must be forwarded with the bonus application. <

Hints On Health NERVOUS STOMACH Many people have spells of nervous indigestion. Most of them gulp down a dose of bicarbonate of soda, or else munch one of the numerous anti-acids available on drugstore counters. Doctors call this nervous indigestion gastric neurosis. The stress and strain of modem day civilization is to blame. Nervous persons find their stomachs reacting quickly, sometimes violently, to their daily problems and troubles. Many times there is a complete loss of appetite. In other cases the patient finds his appetite cannot, be satisfied; he literally grows fat on worry. Some excitable children will on slight excuse. Nervous diseases may be organic. In that case, actual damage is being done to nerves somewhere in the body. Other nervous diseases are functional In that case the organ involved is not functioning well due to interference from “nerves.” So, in gastric neurosis the nerves of the stomach are acting in such a way as to cause numerous digestive discomforts. Bicarbonate of soda and patent remedies may mask the situation, but they cure nothing. The only cure for nervous indigestion is to learn to control one's nature. If letting your emotions run your life instead of you running your emotions is your problem, better learn to control those emotions short of developing an ulcer.

GRADUATE NURSES NEEDED TO FIGHT POLIO EPIDEMIC The Red Cross today renewed its appeal for all graduate nurses willing to serve in the fight against infantile paralysis. It urged all available nurses to list their names with the local Red Cross chapter immediately. Lincoln 1441. For the second straight year, the increase in polio cases together with the existing shortage of nurses have made it necessary for the Red Cross to serve as a recruiting agency for polio nurses.

All-Stars Open Season September 11th Indianapolis' entry in the IntraState Football Conference will open its season Sept. 11 at the Pendleton Indiana Reformatory. Even though Pendleton is not a member of the Conference they have been known to produce some of the finest football teams in the state of Indiana. Often tougher than the average ball team and always in excellent condition they have given the “All-Stars” many a hard and thrilling game in past years. Although Pendleton has never scored a victory over the “AllStars” they came the closest last year with a 7-7 tie. Perhaps this is the year that Pendleton hopes to do the trick with Will Wertf as new coach. In the meantime coach Ronald Dodds of the “All-Stars” is working his 75 boys in order to find the best 25 to make the team. Two new men were added to the “Stars” roster this week. They are Gerald K. Dodds Jr., of Anderson and James Watkins, last year’s Western DI. State Teachers tackle. x Both will provide additional strength for the “All-Stars” 16game schedule. Thanks To Speedway Citizens Thank you citizens of Speedway for everything you have done and are doing for me and my family. It is hard to express the gratitude I feel toward you all. l ean only say that my children and I are proud that we are members of such an all-American, fine conununity. Mrs. Nelma J. Cantwell and family.

This recruitment of polio nurses by the Red Cross is in accordance with an agreement made in 1948 between the National Red Cross and the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. As a result of this agreement, when local hospitals are unable secure the necessary number of nurses for polio cases, the Red Cross is then asked to recruit them. The need for nurses for polio cases is extremely important. Whether the victim is a child or an adult, he is helpless to use different parts of his body, and it is the nurse who must change the position of his leg or arm or head or turn him completely over when muscles ache from lying in the same position. And it is the nurse who wraps steaming hot cloths around his body to help relieve the pain and to prevent crippling effects of the dread disease. With respirator cases there is an even greater need for care, for the patient must be watched twenty-four hours a day. Red Cross chapters throughout the United States are turning all their efforts and resources toward recruiting graduate nurses for polio duty, either in their own or other areas. Thus far, the local fted Cross has recruited 52 local nurses for polio duty. In addition, 22 nurses to help with respirator cases have been sent in from “outside” this area by the National Red Cross at the request of the local chapter. Local Red Cross officials stressed that no one knows what to expect in the polio emergency but that the Red Cross must be prepared for whatever happens. They ask that every graduate nurse who is or will be available notify the Red Cross immediately.

THROUGHOUT THIS WEEK AND NEXT several plan to attend the current series of services at the Walnut and Grant Streets Church of Christ in Martinsville. Evangelist C. R. Turner is the speaker each evening. Despite the fact that several families are now on vacation the attendance has been held at a very good average. “When the trusting soul becomes perplexed at the failure of the church to raise money by its devised manner, she wrote a letter to a famous educator, asking his advice. She listed the numerous things the congregation had tried, but to no avail. In his reply, the teacher said, “My dear lady, why not give God's plan a try?” The result must have been startling.”— Selected. If the church be dead or alive, it is because of its members. ~

Speedway Men’s Softball There isn't much to report for the softball games. Rain has kept the schedule on the waiting list. On Wednesday, August 10, the Kats and Lockers played their tie off with the Kats on top of a lopsided score, 17 to 2. The Lockers just couldn’t get going, either to score or to stop the Kats. The Lockers scored 1 each in the Sth and 7th, while the Kats made 3, 4,3, 3, 2 in each successive inning except the sixth which was a zero. This eliminates the Lockers and sends the Kats against the Flyers. Ever since last Thursday, August 11th, the Kats and Flyers have been trying to get at each other but rain has held them up. Finally on Monday, August 16th, they sneaked their game in between showers and the Kats had a track meet, overrunning the Flyers 12 to 4. The Flyers had difficulty staying on their flank ia the first inning and permitted the Kats to score 6 runs before they settled down. The Kats scored 6,3, 2, and lin the Ist, 2nd, sth and 6th, while the Flyers settled for 3 and 1 in the 3rd and Sth. This eliminates the Flyers and sends the Kats against the Marathon to decide the winner of the lower bracket. The Lions are still sitting on top place waiting for the winner to come out of the lower bracket. There are two games to be played yet to finish the tourney and-possibly a third game. The game between the Kats and Flyers was played on a new diamond in the city park. The high school diamond had to be relinquished due to football practice starting on the 15th and the Town Board has very kindly and generously turned the diamond in the park, over to the Soft Ball League for the balance of the season and there are plenty of games coming up. The management and all players take this opportunity to extend their thanks for this courtesy and also to thank the School Board and Mr. Jordan for their cooperation and use of the high school diamond. It rained again Tuesday and held up the game between Kats and Marathon.
