Boys State Representatives Chosen ’ Charles Martin has been designated to represent Speedway Post 198, American Legion, in the annual Boys’ State program. Duane Wiechers was chosen as alternate. A committee consisting of Lawrence Thompson, R. C. Jordan and Nonnan Weller picked these two boys from the junior class on the basis of leadership, personality, mental alertness, honesty, health and sportsmanship.

The Legion Boys’ State program is a school of government and practical politics. Approximately 425 boys will assemble at the Indiana School for the Deaf for the period beginning Saturday, June 11 and ending June 18. Each boy is assigned to a city and county which will be his permanent residence for the entire period. He is also assigned to one of two political parties for election purposes. Government classes are given the boys where they become familiar with the political machinery, the offices to be filled by election, and the duties and responsibilities of the office. Then the boy begins the election process, using the precinct, city, county and state political machinery for the election of all officers. After the election of a complete staff of cfty, county and state officials, the boys are in complete charge of the Boys’ State, carrying on the functions of all departments of the legislative, executive and judicial branches of government. In addition to the above a complete program of sports, entertainment and a visit to the corresponding state office to which he was elected, gives the boys a week of instruction and entertainment.
