Comics To Be-Read On Station WXLW As a special feature for its juvenile audience Indianapolis’ newest radio station, WXLW, has started a comic strip of* the air each Sunday morning from nine until ten. The title of the program is “Uncle Mike Reads The Fun-' nies.” Mike Dunn, WXLW’s announcer is, of course, Uncle Mike. Sponsor of the program 1 is Galyan’s Super Market, 1102 W. 16th street. During this new Sunday morning hour Uncle''Mike reads to the kids the Puck Comics from the Chicago Herald American. Children are invited to come to the WXLW studios at 30th at Kessler Blvd, and become a part of the program. Besides being interviewed by Uncle Mike the kiddies receive candy, popcorn and other good things which are featured at the Galyan Super Market. To give Mike Dunn a rest between strips children’s records are played to round out the show. During the hour each Sunday morning from nine until ten the following comics are read* by Uncle Mike: “Blondie,” “Henry,” “Donald Duck,” “Room and Board,” “Tim Tyler’s Luck,” “The Lone Ranger,” “Popeye,” “Elmer,” “Uncle Remus,” and “Rusty Riley.” \ Plastic Clothesline Plastics are used frequently in unusual and unnoticed ways. Latest use is for clothesline. It is waterproof and easy to clean, with unusual tensile strength and a very low stretch rate. It also can be tied much easier than most lines.

Yatta-ti-Yat-Yat U. S. Out-Talks All Nations The total number of telephones in the world has reached a record 60,600,000, or one for every 38 persons at the start of 1948, according to the new issue of “Telephone Statistics of the World,” released today by the American Telephone and Telegraph Co. The United States, with only about 6 per cent of the world’s population, has nearly three-fifths of its telephones. Of the 6,000,000 telephones gained in 1947, more than 3,250,000 were added in the United States, which at the beginning of 1948 had 34,867,000 telephones in service—one for every four persons. (Since then 3,000,000 more have been added in the U. S.) Sweden had the next highest telephone density with one for every 5 persons. Gain Is Shown The gain in telephones in 1947 was greater than the total number that were in use throughout the world 25 years after Bell made his historic invention. At the turn of the century there was only one telephone for every 800 ' persons in the world. The United States out-talked I all other nations in 1947, with ' 45,000,000,000 telephone converI sations—3,ooo,ooo,ooo more than I the preceding year and nearly 12 I times as many as in Canada which held second place. The avI erage American used the telephone 317 times during the year. New York Leads New York continued to lead the world’s cities with 2,458,102
telephones—more than there are in all of France. Only other city in the world with more than a million telephones was Chicago, with 1,396,387. More than two-thirds of all the telephones in the world are privately owned and operated, and 85 per cent of these are in the United States. The remaining third are government-owned. North Borneo has about 430 telephones, Somaliland 335 and French India 72. Of the world total of more than 60,000,000, 96 per cent connect with the American telephone network.
