Butler To Play DePauw Butler University’s Bulldogs will tackle* the Tigers of DePauw I University in the Fieldhouse Saturday evening, Jan. 8 in the 48th renewal of their basketball rivalry. In this series of games between the two schools which began in 1903, Butler has come out on top in 32 of the contests while losing 15 times. The DePauw Tigers won the first tilt with a 38-24 score. During the 1946-47 season Butler won the game played on their home court, however, when they traveled to Greencastle as leaders in the Indiana Intercollegiate Conference race, the Bulldogs lost both the game and the championship to the DePauw quintet. Butler will enter the game Saturday evening, Jan. 8, with a record of six ■ straight wins in the eight games they have played to date. After losing their first two games to Illinois 67-62 and Ohio State 60-48 on a two day road trip, the Bulldogs returned to their home court defeating the Indiana State Sycamores 52-49. The next five contests have seen Coach Paul “Tony” Hinkle’s boys gain victories over Wabash 59-35, Long Island University 63-54, Indiana 64-55, Purdue 47-43, and Indiana Central 42-39. To date, DePauw has played seven games, and has won three of them by substantial margins. Their first victory was a 52-48 win over Canterbury, while their second and third victories were over Earlham 62-33, and Hanover 62-41. Their losses have been to Indiana 61-48, Ball State 60-41, Illinois Wesleyan in a close one 70-69, and James Millikan 73-54. Despite their losses, the Tigers have managed to score an average of 55.4 points per game, while holding their opponents to an equal 55.2 average. DePauw plays Hanover tonight, Jan. 4, for another workout before coming to Indianapolis.
Starting the game Saturday, Jan. 8, for Butler will be the same five that has been opening the Bulldog action for the past two contests. At center, Butler’s 6 foot 6 inch John Barrowcliff will face either 6 foot 6 inch John Heise, or 6 foot 1 inch John Stauffer. Stauffer who started the season as a forward has been in the starting center position for the past two games. The forward positions will see Butler’s high scoring Ralph“ Buckshot” O’Brien and Robert Evans face Mac Parker and Russell Freeland of DePauw. The guards will be James Doyle and Charlie Maas or Bill Shepherd for Butler with Glen Eckelman and John Mote in for DePauw.
DePauw will have a height advantage over “Tony’s Ponies” both in the starting five and in the entire squad. Hinkle’s dependables average a little over the 6 foot 1 inch mark while the Tigers average 6 feet 2 inches per man. As a squad the Bulldogs edge slightly over the 6 foot mark while the Greencastle team again levels off at 6 feet 2 inches. / - Gm Leakage Any leakage of gas, no matter how small, may be dangerous. Although the quantity of gas escaping may appear to be insufficient to cause asphyxiation or explosion, it is never possible to be sure of this without a chemical analysis of the mixture. Hence, a person should never regard an air-gas mixture as safe and, when even a slight escape of gas is noted, shut off any equipment using the gas and immediately provide as much ventilation as possible.
