Personals Billy Sanders spent several days this week on the farm with his grandparents. The Rev. and Mrs. A. L. Bixler of Lewisburg, Pa., their daughter, Olive, and son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George Bixler of Cleveland, paid a brief visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Butler of 1732 Christopher Lane Friday. Tbey are on a motor trip to California. Mrs. Butler is a sister of Mrs. George Bixler. Neil Ellwanger is convalescing in his home, 1737 Christopher Lane after undergoing a major operation. Mrs. Jack Livingston, 1124 Winton, entertained with a luncheon Tuesday for Mrs. Orville Miller who is moving to Madison, Wis. Guests present were Mesdames Charles Cantwell, Kenneth Murray, Donald Dean, Verne Thompson, Frank Morgan, Gene Houpt. They presented Mrs. Miller with a going-away gift. About fifty people have designated that they desire to become charter members of the Methodist Church in Speedway. Our goal is 100 or more. Organization Day will be on Charter Member Sunday on Sept. 19. Bishop Ranes will be invited for this occasion as well as the district superintendent. The nominating committee for church organization included Rev. John Walton, Chairman, P. W. Campbell, R. L. Aikman, Mrs. Ralph Hughes, and Mrs. L. P. Nelson. . Miss Wendie Lou Miller was an overnight guest of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Livingston and son, Steven, last Thursday. Ann Brockman and Judy Wood are spending two weeks at Scout Camp. Letters home say they are having a wonderful time. Mrs. Martha Roush Dolmetsch of Indianapolis was the dinner guest of Mrs. Ida Marvel and Aunt Minta Carter, who is spending the week with Mrs. Marvel. Mr. and Mrs. Bill Zink have returned from their Canadian fishing trip. We hear that Edith caught the biggest fish. Speedway Motor Service John R. (Bob) Hoss announces that his new garage, located atj 1032 Main St., is open for business. Mr. Hoss is a graduate of the National Automotive and Electrical School of Service Engineering of Los Angeles, Calif. After graduation from this school in 1924, he came to Indianapolis and was employed in the service department of Stutz Motor Car Co. of America for the following seven years. Mr. Hoss is a Carter Carburetor technician -and a member of the National Automotive Maintenance Association. He has had 20 years experience in automotive repair and is qualified and equipped to give the best of serivce to the motoring public."'
School News Miss Eleanor Greer, teacher of girls physical education and social studies, is enrolled at the University of Colorado this summer on work toward her Master’s degree. The Speedway School Board has approved the purchase of a visual cast projector for the visual education department. Miss Gladys Pauline Hendrickson, teacher of music in the Tolono Community High School at Tolono, 111., for the past nine years has been employed as music teacher in the Speedway schools for the coming term. Miss Hendrickson has had 14 years teaching experience and is a graduate of Indiana University. She is a native of Paragon, Ind., and a member of the Baptist Church. The employment of Miss Hendrickson completes the elementary staff for the coming term. Elementary teachers will be: Principal, Lincoln Northcott; kinder-, garten, Helen Hickok; grade 1, Blanche Wagle, Mary Lou Knetzer and Betty Davis; grade 2, Louis LiebenderfOr and Marguerite Metz; grade 3, Helen Noel and Margaret Wilson; grade 4, Hazel Smith and Mildred Middaugh; grades 5 and 6, George McClelland, Lucile Kessler, Muriel Thompson and LaVerne Ridlen; art, Doris Ann Watson; music, Gladys Pauline Hendrickson, and school nurse, Beth Blind. Allen Tapscott and Harry Miller will continue as elementary school custodians.
Miss LaVeme Ridlen was at the school building Tuesday to check on orders for rental films for next year. A large number of films have been booked starting with the opening of school. The number of films received has been increased each year. Films used are those which actually apply to material being taught. A list of high school teachers who have been employed will appear in next week’s issue of the Speedway Flyer. The 4-H Club had a picnic at Northern Beach Tuesday, July 20. There were about 50 girls who attended. Mothers who drove and spent the day with the girls were Mrs. Paul Lindley, Mrs. C. J. McDowall, Mrs. Harry Madden, Mrs. Brady, Mrs. O. Lambert, Mrs. Floyd Beck. A picnic lunch was enjoyed at noon and then the afternoon was spent in swimming. The local 4-H exhibit will be held at the. school building Thursday, July 29. Judging of individual exhibits will start at 9 a. m. There will be a program and dress revue at 2:30 p. m. Anyone interested is cordially invited to attend.
Local Girl Marries Race Driver Vanelia Dell Eakin, 5121 West 16th St., was married last week to George Connor, 500-Mile race driver. The ceremony was read in the home of the bride’s sister, Mrs. Reva Watson, 5030 West 12th St. The Connors, who managed to keep the impending marriage a total secret from gasoline alley friends, are honeymooning in Milwaukee before visiting Mr. Connor’s parents in California. They will return to Indianapolis next month. He has been working for

“The Merry Widow” To Be Presented In Butler Bowl MANY NOTED PLAYERS IN CAST Alonzo Price brings another timeful operetta to Butler Bowl next week, Franz Lehar’s “The Merry Widow,” starring Victoria Sherry, Charles Purcell, Phyllis Wilcox, and Dennis Carrol. The show opens Sunday night, July 25, to play through Friday, July 31. Charming in music, intriguing in lines and situation, the scene oc this second musical play of the “Stars Under the Stars” series is laid in Paris, with a Viennese musical accent Victoria Sherry, born in Jersey City, N. Also, her repertoire includes such operas as “Carmen,” “La Traviata,” “Faust,” “Romeo and Juliet,” etc~ She has made several important concert tours, both in the United States and South America, and is a featured artist of the Columbia Broadcasting System. Miss Sherry was last seen in Indianapolis in the Shubert productions “Blossom Time” and “Student Prince.”
Charles Purcell, after discovery by the New York impresario B. C. Whitney in a Nashville (Tenn.) amateur show, played the leading role in “The Chocolate Soldier,” two years on Broadway and the “road.” He became one of the youngest stars on Broadway, playing in such, successes as “Maytime,” “Dearest Enemy,” and “Ziegfeld Follies." Both Dennis Carroll and Phyllis Wilcox (from Indianapolis) are old favorites on the Butler Bowl stage, both from this season’s Sigmund Romberg production, “The Desert Song,” and last summer’s “Naughty . Marietta” and “The New Moon.” Also, both have won several national music competitions. Representing Indiana University, Miss Wilcox won Phil Spitalny’s National "Hour of Charm” Contest, and last September was chosen winner of Eddie Dowling’s “Big Break” on his NBC broadcast. Mr. Carroll won the national Atwater-Kdnt Radio Auditions. Fabien Sevitzky will conduct an all-Tchaikowsky concert Friday evening, July 23. Soloists include: Eugene List, pianist, and Carroll Glenn, violinist k The remaining “Stars Under the Stars” programs include: two operettas, four symphony concerts, and two performances of “Carmen.” Seats for all performances are now on sale at tire English Theater box office. Prices for all programs except “Carmen” are: $1.35, $1.95, and $2.55 for reserved cushioned-back seats. “Carmen” prices for the same sections are| $1.95, $2.55, and $3.15. CAMP FIRE GIRLS “Christmas” is coming to Camp Delight, the Indianapolis Camp Fire Girls Camp, on Sunday, July 25. The celebration of Christmas on that date is an old Camp Delight tradition of which campers look forward each year. The Christmas festivities will start on Saturday evening with' a party. There’ll be games and Christmas carols around a decorated live Christmas tree. The live Christmas tree, a gift from Alex Trichinsky of Hillsdale Nursery and a member of the Camp Delight Camp Committee, will be set up in the lodge. Santa will arrive with favors for everyone. Throughout the day on Sunday there’ll be an air of festivity about the Camp with the lodge dining room and cabins decorated in real Christmas style with greens and drawings of Christmas scenes. Some cabin groups will decorate their ’cabins in keeping with Christmas celebrations in other countries. On Sunday evening there’ll be a Christmas dinner served with members of the Executive Board of the Railway Business Women’s Association of Indianapolis of which Miss Armanda Anderson is President as special giiests. After dinner the celebration will be concluded with a Christmas Carol Vesper Service.
Boy Scout Michigan Hike The Boy Scouts of Speedway are leaving Saturday morning, July 24 at 4 a. m. on their third annual summer hike. This year the boys are again going to Camp Grelich which belongs to the Scenic Trails Boy Scout Council of Traverse City, Mich. This hike will be under the direction of G. E. Higgins and Fred Hoerger who will be assisted by committeemen Wm. Xk Vincent, T. A. Heinekamp, O. A. Hodson, Joseph Petraits and Louis Rumple. American Legion At the July 13 meeting of Speedway Post No. 198 the following officers were elected and were installed by Commander Chas. McCarthy of Garfield Post No. sp Thos. M. Strouse, commander; Calvin B. Strouse, adjutant; Norman E. Brennan, first vice-com-mander; Paul S. Eberts, second vice-commander; George L. Sauer, finance officer; George L. punbar, sergenat-at-arms, and Archie B. Pace, historian. Members of the Executive Committee in addition to the first five officers are: Merland Q. Aldridge, W. H. Anderson, Sr., Frank M. O. Asplund, George L. .Dunbar, Lewis A. Goontz, dale Hasler, Fred W. Hoeltje, Archie B. Pace, Dale O. Smith and Earl C. Wiseman, Jr. The uniforms for our Junior Baseball Team arrived and our boys make a much better appearance on the field. With league play continuing through July and part of August, our boys should get enough game experience to make the next years more successful. To reach the park, turn right at the first stop light in Lebanon, and the road will lead right into the park. Watch for the class banner, which will be near the shelter house Each family is asked to bring a covered dish with table service, and a quart of strong sweetened tea, which will be placed in a large iced container. Ice cream will be furnished by the class. Those desiring transportation are asked Jo meet at the church around 3:00 o’clock, and those with room in their cars are asked to meet there also. During the months of August, we will have Robert Huber, one of our own young men, as guest preacher. Mr. Huber is a senior at Indiana University, and following his graduation, next year, will enter■*to‘ complete hfis training for the ministry. He is one of three young men of our church who are training for full-time Christian service, namely, James Nay who is attending Texas Christian University at Fort Worth, and who filled our pulpit last August, Robert Logue, who has had one year of study at Butler, and Robert Huber. During his years at Ind/tina University, Bob has been active jn the Campus Christians, and is at present, Executive Vice-President of the Disciples Student Fellowship, a national student organization. His sermon topics during the month will be as follows: August I—“ Are You Sure?” / August B—“ What Happened to Life?" August 15—“ Christ or Christianity?” August 22—“ Can a Christian Compromise with the World?” August 29—“ Complacency, Our Worst Enemy.” < Ideal weather and a splendid turn-out marked the success of our cornerstone laying service last Sunday afternoon. All of those who had anything to do with the program, performed their parts well, and people went away from the services with high hopes in their hearts for the future of our church. The church school is in need of a metal or wood chest or cabinet to use for storing supplies and equipment. Long Time Speedway Resident Dies Charles R. Johnson, 58 years old, 4949 West 13th Street, a long time resident of Speedway, died at his home last Wednesday evening. He had been employed by the Indianapolis Postoffice for 26 years until his retirement three years ago. He was cofounder of the Speedway Masonic Lodge and' was a member of Scottish Rite,

Thome will conduct services at the Flanner and Buchanan Mortuary at 3 pan. Saturday. Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Marie Josephine Johnson; a son, Ralph Johnson, and a grandson, all of Indianapolis.
