Buys Eyeglasses For Needy School Children More than 2800 pairs of eyeglasses have been purchased for needy school children by the Christian Men Builders “Century Club,” according to Elmer Wilson, president of the club. Several years ago while serving on the Indianapolis School Board, Merle Sidener, leader of the class, discovered that there was no fund in the city available for the purchase of eyeglasses for children handicapped by poor eyesight whose parents could not afford to buy them. He suggested to several members of C.M3. that such a need might be fulfilled through an organization within the class. They immediately formed the Century Club and set out to enroll one hundred members in the organization. The membership fee was set at $3.00, the entire amount to be applied to the purchase of a pair of eyeglasses for some needy school child. Members have th J” privilege of renewing their membership each year. If someone drops out, his number in the clufc is filled by a new member. However, membership in the Century Club is not confined to C.M.B.’s alone. Many outsiders, including members of the radio audience, have purchased, membership to help the worthy cause.

Selection of children to be fitted with glasses is left entirely to school and Health Board authorities. A teacher, upon discovering a pupil who is not doing so well in school, reports her findings to the school nurse. If it is found that the child’s eyesight is impaired, family circumstances are investigated. If the family is needy and cannot afford to pay for the glasses, the child is sent for examination and fitting, and the bill is sent to C.MJB.
