BeD Telephone Co. Makes Awards for Tornado Service Mrs. Artie Bateman, Mrs. Fay Richardson, Miss Isa Baird and Mr. Cleo Selch, employees of the Indiana Bell Telephone Company at Danville, Ind., have been awarded bronze Vail Medals and SIOO cash awards for their acts of outstanding public service during the tornado that struck Danville last March 26.

The twister struck the threestory building containing the telephone office with all of its fury. The top story, above the switchboard room, was ripped off completely and one outside wall of the switchboard room fell away. Although the office was thrown into darkness and despite personal danger, Miss Baird, chief operator, assisted by Mrs. Richardson and Mrs. Bateman, remained at their posts to summon assistance to the stricken community and to handle calls for medical aid. Mr. Selch, repairman, rendered unusual public service in maintaining emergency communications. In addition, a special group citation was awarded to all employees of the company who had a' part in the speedy restoration

of telephone service to that community. Vail awards were established in 1920 in memory of Theodore N. Vail, former president of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company, to recognize noteworthy public service performed by telephone employees. Frequently they are performed in line of duty in the face of considerable personal danger.
