% Millionth Telephone In Service The Indiana Bell Telephone Company has placed, its half-mil-lionth telephone in service, L. W. Shumaker, division manager here, announced today. The half million mark represents an increase of 150,000 Indiana Bell telephones in service since the war and is more than twice the number in use eight years ago, the manager said. The installation of the 500,000 th telephone took place seven miles northeast of Marion, at the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Hix. The Hix’s applied for service several months ago, but the telephone could not be installed until wire and cable could be placed and additional equipment to serve it was available in the Marion telephone office, Mr. Shumaker said. In a brief ceremony at the Hix residence today a telephone with a metal plate engraved for the occasion was substituted for the 500,000 th telephone which was installed there May 27. While it is still impossible to provide many party line users here with the higher grades of service they have requested, the waiting list for telephones which stood at' 16,681 on V-J Day has been reduced to 613. During this period there has been an increase of some 55,000 telephones in service to a total of about 190,000 at the present time. The Hix farm near Marion has been in the family many years. Mr. Hix and his brother were born there, his three children, ages 4 months, 2 years and 5 years, were born there and his parents have their home on the place. Mrs. Hix, too, was brought up in the vicinity. Mr. Hix said the family had a telephone until a few years ago when a sleet storm destroyed the lines and the company then furnishing service could not replace them. One Volume Library Manhattan’s telephone book, whicb does not include listings in Brooklyn, Long Island and other boroughs, weighs 4 pounds, contains 1,413 pages and has 565,000 listings. It is exceeded by the Chicago directory, which has 1,736 pages.

Jets Approved For Commercial Transport Service An Allison jet engine today became the first jet engine ever to receive Civil Aeronautics Administration approval for commercial transport operation. Th/ CAA Approved Type Certificate was issued for the Allison Model 400-C4 on the basis of qualification tests for reliability and durability, identical to those required of any engine—reciprocating or turbine—in commercial transportation. Certification of jet engines for commercial transports marks a milestone in the development of jet engines in this country and represents an outstanding achievement for the joint efforts of Allison Division of General Motors Corporation, Lockheed Aircraft Corporation and the U. S. Air Force, according to the announcement by E. B. Newill, General Manager of Allison Division. “Since the end of World WaY H, engineers representing these three organizations have worked intensively to combine with the high power of the Model 400 the dependability and reliability demanded of any type of engine which is to be installed in commercial airplanes,” Mr. Newill declared. Extensive operational experience was gained from the U. S. Air Force P-80 Lockheed Shooting Star which has been produced in larger quantities than any other jet \ powered airplane and which has accumulated a total of more than 100,000 hours flying time with this type of engine. Out of this experience came improvements in engine components which have increased operational life of the engine many times over and at the same time raised the power rating from 3875 pounds to 4600 pounds thrust. The Allison Model 400 is one of the most powerful turbo-jet engines produced in quantity anywhere in the world. It has powered the Lockheed Shooting Star to many significant speed records and last summer brought the world’s speed record back to the U. S. for the first time in 24 years. The engine also has been or-
Reign of The Bureaus By GEORGE S. BENSON President of Harding College Searcy. Arkansas
“BUREAUCRACY” is a mossedover but not outmoded term. Its popularity may have faded lately because politicians seem to use the term less and less. I fear that all too many folks have assumed that government by bureaucracy is here to stay, that no matter what brand of national administration you have, the emphasis will still be on Washington. Yet, to welcome an increasing reign of bureaucrats is to invite totalitarianism. The battle against political encroachments upon the. lives of our people still can be won. When the facts are carried straight to the bar of public opinion, I believe informed Americans will repudiate this reign of bureaucrats. For a generation, the scope of government’s power has extended outward from the federal center. People are tired of abuses that come in the wake of bureaucracy. Beyond DO YOU realize that The Law some 1,200 federal bureaus now exist to dominate, control, and restrain every manner of human activity? Back of these bureaus eleven government agencies function as corporations. The majority of these have little constitutional justification. Compliance with constitutional law is not important to these bureaus and agencies. Neither is the spirit of individual enterprise, which is so much a part of American tradition. These agencies feel they are beyond the law and the spirit of the constitution. While competing with the private enterprise of citizens, these federal corporations indulge in wasteful, extra-
dered by the U. S. Navy to be used in the Grumman F9F Panther. To make sure that the military services have exclusive right to the latest developments in engines, the CAA requires that a later model be in production for the military before commercial certification is given to a previous model. Allison does have a later and more powerful model in production and development is continuing which will result in still higher power ratings which will become available for U. S. aircraft.
Y.M.C.A. To Celebrate 104th Birthday ■One hundred and four candles will sparkle on a birthday cake at the Indianapolis Young Men’s Christian Association June 6 as it joins 6,000 other “Y’s” around the world in celebrating the organization’s founding in 1844 by a group of youthful British dry goods clerks. It was 104 years ago this June that 22-year-old George Williams called together 11 of his friends to see what could be done about improving the wretched condition of their fellow-workers in the London drapery trades. From that meeting the Y. M. C. A. was organized and today serves boys and young men in 74 countries. In the United States 1,540 Y. M.C.A.’s have a total mem-

vagant, and corrupt practices. A screen of - bureaucratic confusion, with the help of garbled records and false accounting methods, hides them from full public view. These methods resemble those of the monarchies of old! No Rent, FEDERAL corporaNo Taxes tions that compete with the enterprises of private citizens have rare advantages. They pay no rent, and decline to refer to this in their bookkeeping. They are simply "operating government property.” They pay no taxes, like the corporations with which they compete. They are “the government,” and their purpbse is to consume taxes. Tax money is grist for their mills. Despite having to pay no rent and no taxes, federal corporations are estimated by one source as having used up $5,500,000,000 more than they earned in the year ending last June. Moreover, they have a free rein on costs. Losses added to well-hidden costs are estimated to make up a full third of the annual federal budget. All this cost is a huge burden on the productivity of . our citizens. Such wastefulness has no place in this people’s republic! _ Consider the effect on our nation now, if we could eliminate one-third of the tax requirement! Not only would we have needed money for world rehabilitation and for retiring the national debt. While establishing a sound federal economy by eliminating these needless government costs, we would increase the- standard of living for everyone. But most important, by ending the' reign ‘ of z bureaucracy, we would halt the march toward totalitarianism!
bership of 1,665,722, Parker Jordan, general secretary of the Indianapolis Y. M. C. A ( said. Membership of the local association on May 31 was 111,738. It takes, he said, $85,000,000 yearly to operate American Y. M. C. A?s whose buildings and equipment are valued at $232,000,000. “During the past year,” Mr. Jordan said, “Y. M. C. A.’s in this country found 58,500 jobs for young men, served 46,800,000 meals, gave swimming lessons to 354,000 persons and physical examinations to 148,000.” A little known fact about the Y. M. C. A. is that one out of 10 members is a girl The work is directed by over 200,000 laymen serving as volunteers on boards and committees. Professional staff members number 4,118:
