Indiana Bell Telephone Spends sls Million For New Plant Additions
Nearly sls million for new plant additions last year to meet the increased -needs for telephone service in the state was the highlight of the Indiana Bell Telephone Company’s annual report for 1947, just issued by William A. Hughes, president. Despite shortages of telephone equipment and materials, the company was able to add enough new facilities to increase the number of telephones in use by more than 50,000. Twenty-one building projects, including new buildings and additions to existing buildings were under construction during the year and many others were

being planned. Waiting applications for telephone service were reduced from 30,000 a year ago to 15,100. " Mr. Hughes pointed out that while the 1947 expansion exceeded all previous records, it represented only about one-third of the'company’s post war program for more and better service. Indiana Bell earnings for the year as a whole were equal to 4% on capital obligations compared with 5H% for 1946, the president said. However, rate increases which went into effect in the latter part of 1947 had improved earnings to a going rate of 6% by the end of the year. Earnings for 1947 were $2,250,000, about $300,000 less than in 1946 while capital invested in the business was increased by sll,600,000—about 23%. The Indiana Bell president pointed out that since additions to telephone plant are paid for through new capital and not from revenues from service, it was necessary to bring large amounts of new money into the business. Additional shares of common stock were sold to the American Telephone and Telegraph Company and authority was received to sell up to $75 million in stock as more funds are needed. z Total revenues increased 15% to a record high of $32,250,000. Expenses and taxes were up 18% to $30,000,000 nearly two-thirds of which was for payroll expense and benefit costs. Long distance business continued to increase in volume, particularly calls between Indiana points. Long distance calls handled by the company averaged 77,000 a day, compared with 29,000 a day in 1939. Paying tribute to the 8,200 employees of the company, President Hughes stated that the quality of service rendered last year was better in most respects ’than in 1946. The largest single building project of the company is the addition of five more stories on the Indianapolis administration building. New buildings or additions to existing buildings were in progress at Anderson, Bedford, Bloomington, Columbus, Evansville, Marion, Muncie, New Albany, Plainfield, South Bend and several at Indianapolis. Architectural work was carried on for eight other projects that will be started in the future: new

Thirteen sites for new telephone offices were purchased last year: at Bluffton, Brooklyn, Crawfordsville,' Culver, Elwood, Evansville, Frankfort, Hartford City, Huntington, Montpelier, Peru, Vincennes'und Washington. Looking ahead to 1948, Mr. Hughes stated: “These are busy times for the telephone company. Although 1947 was a year of record progress, we confidentally expect to make even greater strides during 1948.” PERSONALS (Continued from Page 1) Presto cooker as a gift. Gas Consumption Hits All-Time High Gas consumption in Indianapolis and Marion County hit an alltime high in February. In spite of the fact that February was a short month, 14 million more cubic feet of gas were consumed than were used in January, one of the coldest January* on record. The 6 thousand house heating customers on the lines of the Citizens Gas and Coke Utility used more gas than the 105 thousand domestic users during February. House heating consumption also was a third greater than all gas used for industrial purposes in Indianapolis and Marion County. Total gas consumption during February, 1948 was 1,075,166,000 cubic feet.
