Butler Closes Basketball Season After closing their 1947-48 season with a 61 to 50 win over Western Reserve in Mid-Ameri-can Conference play to make a record of 14 wins in 21 outings, Butler University’s Bulldogs returned home early this week with nothing left before them except their award banquet which was scheduled for Wednesday, March 10. During the season that just closed, the Bulldogs lived up to early season expectations and came close to equaling several records set last season. During the 1946-47 basketball year,* the Butler team won 15 games and lost 7, set a new one season team scoring record, and freshman guard Charles Maas established a new one season individual scoring record. Although no new records were

established during the season that just ended, the Bulldogs showed signs of equaling the team’s season record and forward Ralph “Buckshot” O’Brien needed one more game to break Maas’ one season individual scoring record. O’Brien sizzled 104 field goals and 43 free throws through the nets for a total of 251 points, just 8 short of the record-establishing 259 scored by Maas last year. In conference races this season, the Bulldogs failed to win aujr first place laurels. In the MidAmerican, in which they were co-defending champions, they won 4 and dropped 2 to fall behind the University of Cincinnati, who has a first place cinched. In the Indiana Intercollegiate Conference the Bulldogs won 7 and lost 1, but no official tabulation of I. I. C. standing has been released yet. « The Butler team has scored 1,172 points which is just short of lhst season’s team high of 1,308. While the team didn’t score as many points as they did last year, they held opponents down to 1,031 which is almost 200 short of last year’s high of 1,215. Only one man will be lost off the varsity squad by graduation this spring and for the second consecutive year Coach Paul ‘Tony” Hinkle will have his complete starting lineup returning for the next season. Serves Triple-Duty A new aluminum electric popcorn popper can serve also as a hot plate or as container for the preparation of soups and stews.
